Orange Hobby's 1/700 Dokdo UPDATE 12/13/13

Re: Orange Hobby's 1/700 LPH-6111 Dokdo UPDATE 6/24/12

I remember Dad talking about oil washes giving a lot of depth to the waves and the color of the water. Maybe something to try? Looking good Kenny :mpup

Cool. Are you going to put a wake on the ship and or the hovercraft? If its moving there should be something. Looks sharp though and so tiny. Man I dont know how you guys see to model that small. (y) (y) (y) (y)

James, thanks. I will be doing a wake and spray for the LCAC. I need to do some research though on whether or not assault ships remain moving while recovering landing craft. I don't believe they do.

Thanks Saul.

Wow Kenny! You make that water base look so easy to do! Awesome!

This is looking great. One thing you may consider: hovercraft spray water and mist out all sides when traveling, especially traveling slowly. Don't forget to add some spray effect around the hovercraft. Also, I noticed a little fogging on some of the deck decals. Maybe another coat of clear will take that away.

Keep this going Kenny, I have been loving this thread!

James, from this photo it looks like the Dokdo has come to a stop to recover the LCAC.

Mark, thanks for the comments. I haven't dull coated yet. That should take care of the decal problem. I'm using the above photo as my reference. I've kept some of the polyfill that Mac the dog has ripped out of his stuffed toys to make the spray.

Yes it is. I may need to rethink my base.

I've tried the technique a couple of times and I'm still playing with it.

Re: Orange Hobby's 1/700 LPH-6111 Dokdo UPDATE 6/24/12

Hey guys. I've tried a couple of techniques and the one I liked best was to stipple gel medium on the base and then, using a flat brush in a circular pattern, break up any patterns that might have been made. Once the gel medium was dry, I made sure to mask off where the ship's hull would be.

I primed it white and then gave it a light coat of metallic teal automotive paint you get in a spray can.

Make sure you go in both directions.

After that was dry, I loaded up the airbrush with Model Master transparent blue and sprayed that on top of the teal. I've cut out the foam board where the ramp will be to give the effect that it is recessed into the water. I've glued the hull to the foam board and will use Vallejo's Pacific Blue water effects to fill in any voids.

After a looooong layoff, I pulled out the Dokdo and started working on the water some more. I've done a lot of research as to how best to make a water base and I'm going to see if I can bring this base up to snuff. I've added a coat of clear heavy gel with a stippling motion to similate the small waves in a calm sea.

Once this is dry, I will blend in wash of royal blue and then a layer of Model Master acrylic clear.

:popcorn

Dad mentioned something about washing water with some color..can't remember now. Didn't seem natural.

Pup, in all the youtube videos and articles I've watched and read, I've learned that to make convencing water you need to layer your colors between gel medium. It gives that depth that you see in photographs.
