Orange Hobby's 1/700 Dokdo UPDATE 12/13/13

I'm starting the Orange Hobby LPH-6111 Dokdo. To give you some background on this ship, the Dokdo is the first of a 4 ship class of amphibious assault ship. She measures 653 ft, some 200 feet shorter than her American counterparts. She carries 2 LCAC landing craft, 15 Blackhawks or 10 Oceanhawks, 6 tanks, 7 AAVs and 720 ROK Marines. She has a crew of 700.

To begin, you need to trim off the large pour stubs on the one piece waterline hull. While this looks daunting, 5 minutes with a stainless steel saw blade in my Dremel and they were gone. I also cut off the pour stub on the well deck. I test fit these two part and the fit was very good, almost locking in place.

I've ordered L'arsenal's 1/700 LCACs to place in the beautifully molded well deck.

I brought the Dokdo to work today to get the well deck/hanger deck primed with Mr. Surfacer 1000. It's a good representation of the light color of the deck walls in most amphibious ships. Orange Hobby does not have a color call out for the interior, so any color is a guesstimate. I did solve the mystery of what was thought to be the misshapen Oceanhawk helicopter. They are in fact KUH helicopters as seen here:

Tsk, tsk... had you read my Dodko review here on Modelers' Alliance, it wouldn't have been a mystery. They are Surion helicopters of this exact type:

Working on the Dokdo today. Orange Hobby doesn't give a color call out for the interior. But fear not, most of our Asian allies' naval vessels mimic the the US Navy's colors in form and function. So, the floor of the well deck has been painted a rust brown color while the walls are a light gray with a dark gray/black row of bumpers lining the walls.

The interior surfaces are coated with Future and are awaiting a black wash.

Progress report. Mast, radar array, deck crane, RAM launcher and 1 CIWS mount attached. I lost the other CIWS mount so I need to find a replacement.

I am sure that Eric, at Orange Hobby, will be thrilled to see this build! Maybe he can replace the part?

Regards,

That would be great if he could Saul. I was going to use Dragon's CIWS in it's place. If he can, I'll take both of them.
