I've seen it so many times, all the way back to grade school I think, I always seen the guy as having been overwhelmed and having to be helped on the beach. I found some more pictures in this series that had the same fellow helping bring ashore the rubber raft they are dragging him from. NOW I understand what got the better of him, he was helping land a raft full of wounded guys. I'll try to find that picture again.

I haven't had time to check all these out but this picture jumped out at me.

The Gentleman driving that contraption is none other than the late U.S. Senator and former Governor of the Great State of South Carolina, Strom Thurmond. He was a walking legion around these parts. He was a Federal Judge when WWII broke out, he resigned the bench (a position that would have exempted him from service) and volunteered for Airborne. At 40 years of age, he was deemed too old to jump so he arrived in a glider that day.

He retired a Major General in the Reserves and of all the offices and positions he held over the years, General was the preferred title he liked to be called by.

When he retired from the Senate he held the record for longest serving and at age 100, the oldest Senator to hold office. He also holds some more dubious records, not the least which is, the last man to get in a fist fight on the floor of the Senate.

This has been your South Carolina history moment... :mpup

MOONIE,

Big Strom kickin' it on a KettenKrad ! Would've been cool if he was able to keep it & send it back Home ? !

It would've made a nice little Columbia Scooter ! :D

Nice pic. & History ... Thanx for sharing !

Great photos Erik! (y)

Thanx Sherm.

Even though I am drawn to the German Armor ... I think One of My favorite pix is the American Camo guys from 1st. Armored Division. These Camo;s nearly got th entire Unit wiped out as they were often mistaken for the Germans in Their Pea-Dot. It's a neat little Factoid about Normandy & Nice to See Americans in Camo .. even if it was for a little while, 'cause They quickly abandoned these Uni's for Their Olive Drabs !

Talk about Collectors Item ... You would have a major Chunk of $$$ if you had one of these in your Collection !! Huh ?

I think this was taken around St.Lo ? I'm not exactly sure how long They wore these in th Field ?

This is NOT a Normandy photo. This one is shot at OOSTERBEEK near ARNHEM in the Netherlands during operation MARKET-GARDEN.
The later type of 'STENguns' made me notice it.

Still cool reference.(y) [SHERMAN 18 did post this one]

Greetings,Ron.

Well just shows some web sites are wrong about their photos. :D I found that when looking up "paratroopers in Normandy" on Google.

OK Jeff, here's the other shot I was talking about.

Explains why the guy looks like he's about to fall out.
