OMACON 2024 23 march.

Saturday morning weather was chilly and partly cloudy as we went West with the morning sun at our backs.
Arriving 1020, our drive was uneventful. Omaha weather looked less than promising, but we rented a room to do a friend a favor on Sunday, so whatever Mother Nature had in store was no concern.

52 Modelers entered 192 completed model kits at the Police Union Hall in Omaha Saturday.
4 Plastic Surgeons attended. Joachim Lotz and I entered the show.
Registration was brisk. $15.00 fee for adults to enter an unlimited number of models. I took 7 and entered 6.

Winning raffle tickets were posted on 2 big screens visible from the foyer. Teresa assured me both big screens had the same info on them both. The raffle was a pleasing size for a local show. Lots of airplane models! "Sic 'em Baby!" My Sweetheart began her stalk......

Vendors were plentiful and bargains abounded! I had my list, so I wouldn't lose my head and buy a bunch of bargain kits for the TLAR Models website. "Smile or hide if you don't want to be famous!"
Model vending stalwarts Larry Clausen and.............

good ol' Larry McDermott plied their plastic and otherwise wares. Larry M. had a KMC (?) 1/72 Lockheed L-1011 Tristar on hand that used to belong to Tom Bly. I could not be swayed. I sought only 1/72 JoHan P-40B/C (because I always look for this Unicorn kit) 1/350 HH-60H Rescuehawk helicopters, Revell Ag. 1/72 PT-160, the one with the Thunderbolt gun mount aft, and a new tool Airfix 1/72 Sherman Firefly Vc.

I did cave on this $3.00 Arii 1/700 Aegis Cruiser. She's for an honor build for Josh's dad. Otherwise I behaved myself as best I am able. :blink
I should have bought Jess' Tamiya 1/72 PT-15 kit. His price was reasonable and I was pretty sure he was open to negotiations.

John Lanning's 1/72 Builds Casa 212, AMX and Mirage IIIc were stunners!

Eye-catchers, sans much commentary.

Richard Sliwka Showcase:
1/700 USS Franklin Delano Roosevelt circa 1957. Look at how he wedged the Skywarrior on to the starboard elevator, just like they really did! So often we see a modeler make an amazing ship, but his aircraft fail him. Richard does a fine job on both! 1/700 First prize!

1/350 scale USS Guadalcanal, CVE-60 (yes, the one that captured U-505.) look at the air group and the clean p/e! 1/350 Second prize!
More of Richard's builds can viewed on the link above.

This 1/350 IJN Cruiser Tone was well detailed, clean and complex! 1/350 First prize.

A couple of Terry Barrow's awards.

My own awards. Tiny Tiger Tank, 3rd. 1/700 Barrett's Privateers Antelope sloop 2nd place, behind Richards grand CVB-42

That guy must get around. I think the same kit was at the Atlanta show.

Still reading so I don't get called out again..
Larry McDermott lives in Harlan, Iowa. I would be very surprised if he had gone all the way to Georgia to vend.
Tom Bly's former 1/72 L-1011 cain't be the only one of those HUGE airliner kits available. I would have to build a garage like John's to consider building such an airplane model.

Page 2.
Having spent the day enjoying old friends and swapping old jokes with new ones, we absconded back to our hotel room. After a short breather, we got a might hungry. Across the parking lot was La Vista NE's Island Bar & Grill.
We didn't dress up to play we just wanted food. Proximity, Burgers and tator tots made The Island sound inviting. The food was pretty good, service was dandy and at 9:00, Teresa's hobby began.

Karaoke.
When you sing at The Island, a tropical prize is awarded. Yes folks, we both got "Leighed" at The Island. It was fun!
Having run my mouth most of the day at the contest, I found myself less than able to make much of a joyful noise this evening.
"Mom Prom" was due at The Island any minute. Moms that leave Dad at home with the kids and go to Prom with a cut-out date.
This might have been hilarious to observe, but we "ran out of gas" and retired to the comfy room before Mom Prom arrived.

The following morning we had breakfast with our friend Carl Musselman and went to his house to have a visit/tour and make a repair he needed.
We saw his retired sea captain's front room, Carl's Nuke Lounge with his decades worth of nuclear submarine memorabilia, his Back-Aft Models production facility and his "Scamper Camper". A vehicle modified to Bug Out when the World ends.

Some Vet's have a "Love Me wall". Pictures, certificates, ribbon and award displays, etc. Carl has a whole room with comfy chairs, desk, submarine models, scroll saw woodworks and a waste basket with radiation warning markings that glows green when you open it! Very impressive!
I don't think just anyone is welcome in the Nuke Lounge, without actual US Navy Nuclear Power experience. This was a treat!

I didn't take any pictures out of respect of my friend's privacy. The temptation was great.
RTB in ugly, rainy, weather was without mishap.
A fine visit to Omacon!

I almost forgot about Teresa's raffle prizes! All of these were good quality model kits. A couple had extra decals as a bonus!
Some of these will find their way into the SurgiCon 28 raffle for sure!

Anyone that attended these shows is more than welcome to add to the overview.
Thanks Terry!
Your models always seem to have a job to do or someplace to be.
