LRDG Chevy 1/35

Hi Richard

This is coming along nicely! The chain work is excellent.. I need to get some for my trucks (when I get to them lol). By the way, have you decided which truck you are building? I have a fairly good collection of images, books etc. on the LRDG, so if there is anything you need, sing out.

...Put some chains from cheap jewel necklace mom agreed to sacrifice (thx mom !). The ones supplied by Eduard on the sheet are so thin that's not realistic... PE limits here...
And this way, it works ! It'll help me while at the paintshop !
p1070147.jpg

...

BTW, here's a couple of images of the rear end of 1533X2's with the tailgates open. One truck has a half-cover over the chains (probably made of canvas), and the other looks like a full cover over the chain, and they look like they have teardrop shaped clips on the end clipped through the tailgate (I hope this make sense, but the pictures say it all).

Although these are of scorpion/Breda trucks, they give a really good view of the tailgates which were the same over all the 1533x2 trucks.

I hope these are of help.

Cheers

Rob

Hi,

Thanks Rob. Ya right, the chains are partly canvas covered on some trucks.

Thx for the pics.

Richard

Hey,

The carpets used to free the Chevy from sand bogging are well done by Tamiya, by 1976 standards !
p1070210.jpg

I decided I had to change them. The ingredients are :

Styrene sheet (0,25 mm thick), standard tape and lead foil
p1070148.jpg

I cut the styrene card to match the Tamiya parts' width, ie 13 mm, and then cut little strips
p1070211.jpg

The tape has to be cut in width to 14 mm so it matches Tamiya parts this way (not done yet on my pic hereunder). The strips are 1 mm smaller ang gotta be centered on the tape
p1070212.jpg

Then I apply 14 mm wide lead foil strips and simply wrap them around (be careful, the lead foil is very fragile) to get ...
p1070213.jpg

... two beautiful carpets that'll go on their stands once I'll have these done :pp

Richard

Hi,

Thank you for your kind words :)

Ok, I consider the building process is over...

Let's get some detail view first.

Hussar Productions tyres show a surprising recess around the rim that I filled in with putty thinned with acetone. A fella french modeller already experienced the same so I knew it would happen. But these tyres are way better than Tamiya vinyl ones

Indicator wire and sand carpets PE stand
p1070223.jpg

A brand new external filter :v
p1070214.jpg

On the cargo sides, the PE hooks were far too thin, this is one of the drawbacks of PE parts when you gotta have raised parts. I used copper wire (telephone wire...)
p1070216.jpg

p1070217.jpg

I wanted my Chevrolet to have more punch than one single Lewis MG, though I will not use the Breda 20mm gun. So I added a 50 cal :dude
p1070218.jpg

Cargo stuff (mess'd be better) views, just in place with yellow tack at the moment. It is not full, meaning I will add some camo nets and tarps but you got the idea
p1070222.jpg

I like that kind of details
p1070225.jpg

Now some general views

Paint's next ! And something tells me she might get a pinky robe...

Hi,Richard

Love your build so far. (y)

the .50 mg is a nice touch, noticed the ammo box is a white metal item,
is the MG also?which company is it from?
Don't know if it's historical correct, but it looks sure COOL! :)

Greetings,Ron.

wonderful details Richard! got this kit myself now for the Torch campaign.
Not sure i will reach your level though :)
Will be fun to see it painted!

Very very nice. Everything is coming together (y) (y) (y)
Those hooks are awesome. You squeezed the one end flat? very cool.
James

Thank you very much for your comments ! (y)

@ Ron, the 50 cal comes from an old Peddinghaus kit. This brand stopped producing say about 10 years ago...

@ James, Yep, I squeezed the one end flat of the hooks.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi,

Thanks T :)

Here comes the paint

With preshading first. Chevy painted black and light grey in the middle of the high or flat panels. No reference needed, doesn't matter... Just need some black and light grey, whatever I can grab will do fine ...
p1070226.jpg

Then, here are the colours I'll use :
p1070227.jpg

The pink is the basis, mixed with red for low parts (6 / 1), a little white for highlights (6 / 1), and pink mixed with sand for cargo inside (still 6 / 1).

Here is the result once the last layer was sprayed

Now I'll let it dry and will come back with washes / decals / oils / pigments ...

Richard

Very very cool. I didnt know you could mix Gunze and Tamiya. As for the preshading and everything is it ever neat to see the process and it looks very good too. (y) (y) (y)

This is going to be some SWEET dessert candy!

So sweet that my teeth are rotting away in my mouth by just looking at your build!

Let them rot,Richard, let them rot!!! (y)

Greetings,Ron.

I know you are getting most of it done but have you see these new Sun Dials? It includes the one used by the LRDG:

Hi,

Thanks Ron, thanks sharkmouth. Yep I seen the sun dials, these are really cool, but I will not use them.

I'll make a little diorama, nothing better than a little place in Lybia...

The base is varnished plywood, 23 cm x 30 cm.

I'll make a little "house" with the Chevy. I saw a beautiful and typical one in the Steelmasters issue 106 of the magazine, by Olivier Pouilly. So I, say, copied a little...

Here it is

Plasticard shutters

The Chevy got its decals that were satin cleared and I applied the first washes.
