I found a geared robot motor with sufficient torque, yet small enough to fit the hull without changing the dimensions. I test fit the drive sprocket and plugged it into the StuG's electronics to test.

I also test assembled the kit track links, which should hold up fine since there are enough attachment points. They each need to be drilled out in 5 spots by hand, even the slowest power drill setting will heat the plastic too much. It took over 20 minutes to do one sprue of 6, so I'm looking at around 10 solid hours of mindless drilling.

So where do you get your electronics from? Does that motor get hot at all? Finally the tracks are plastic, right?? Will they hold up to the stress you put them through?

There's a few different ways to set up these things, either straight Tamiya electronics which are pricey and too big for this hull or aftermarket companies. What's driving that motor in the video is the setup in the StuG which is a hybrid of different parts. I'll end up keeping this pretty simple, using the main control board from a toy grade RC tank with an adapter board for better control. I'm not going with a full sound system with this one, there's just not enough room to get too crazy.

The track links are the kit styrene ones, but there are so many connection points I think they'll hold up fine, especially since the finished tank will be relatively light. After paint and dry brushing, I usually finish the tracks with a pigment/resin mud that stands up pretty well to wear, like these T-34 tracks I just finished:

Me, a bucket of water and an electric drill has disaster written all over it. ;)

I found an old cordless drill that had sklow speeds but good torque. With the battery charge kept low, I managed to make it work. It's still tedious, but got it down to about 5 minutes per sprue and assembled one side to test (kit assembly is temporary of course).
