I just did the classical way, drilling holes, sticking thread through, filling holes ... more or less

Ah, OK, I thought it stands for something else - never mind, but you Americans have so many acronnyms for what ever kind of meaning ... Well I'm not that sure, I found some images where it had some guns inside the lower wings but on other images not , so I can't telll for sure. KP delivered it with some bombs.

No, in the top wing there is only onepoke standing out and I don't think it is a gun - see answer to Rhino - from what I found on images there are quite some different usages for this but not that much explanations.
