IN LIVING COLOR

Growing up I loved watching Victory at Sea, World At War, and reading books about World War II. Always the the picture were in black and white. In a way none of it seemed quite real sorta like watching a cartoon, but add the color and all of a sudden it is very real. The people could be some that you know. It could be you. All that stuff really did happen and it is the color that makes the connection. So with this in mind I will post some pictures that I find that show the war in color so we can get the flavor of the times, the people, and machines that made World War II

Enjoy!

Really love that first one-- striking difference between his red hair and the plane behind him (Corsair or Hellcat?)...

That looks like you in that first photo, T. I thought you were a grunt and not a nasal airiator.

That would be a Hellcat and it's in Royal Navy. Couple of dead give aways on that, care to take a shot at them?

I'll add this to the mix, from the archives.

Hmmm...looking closer- the roundel behind the pilot-- but that even looks like it might be RAAF? Don't see the red unless it's hidden....

True too ;)

Although looking through the crew pics on the Massachusetts last weekend, there were a load of pics of USN PT Boat and battle wagon crew with beards :)

The dirt on that Dauntless and those Wildcats on the deck really speak to me .

It would be impossible to walk on the deck and not track dirt all over the birds .

Cheers, Christian B)

Just look at the fuel and oil stains on the deck. You can see why things got dirty.

And still do...at least on deployment. Things aren't as bad on shore where the planes aren't nearly stacked on top of each other. That also has a lot to do w/ the aggressive nature of the non-skid on modern carriers. They don't want the birds sliding around when hooked to a tractor if the boat rocks a bit. If you get knocked/blown down, or trip over a chain...that shit hurts! It will grate skin right off your hands if you aren't wearing gloves. :pinch:

In contrast, check out how clean they were when they had Yellowings. Guess they had more time to keep them spit and shine.
