How are AMTECH kits?

Gene

Member
I just purchased off of Evilbay, 3 bagged AMTECH P-40's Can be built as L's or F's.4 sets of decals.Since I have never built an a/c before, how are these kits? Any major problems? Did the RAF ever offer a single color scheme or were they all cammo'ed? They are 1/48.
Thanks!!!

I think these Amtech kits are old Revel kits so not bad. Saul would know for sure though.

The F and L kits have shape problems in the nose. This is why they came with resin corrections which the person on eBay doesn't offer. He is a good seller and the kits are nice and easy to build. I am awaiting in his reply as I want to buy 2 each of the E and F/L models.

Be careful with the plastic as it is a bit soft but the models are nice.

James,
Thanks!!!
Saul,
Thanks!!
These will OOB till I figure out what I am doing here. So nothing n a single color scheme?

What do you mean by this? Overall OD over Gray is how they came from the factory but were camouflaged based on their Area of Operations.

Also, all the AMTech kits are based on AMT kits which started off as a venture of AMT with ESCI of Italy. this is why the ESCI Henschel Hs-126 appears in their catalog.

I tried one of the AMTECH p-40 E's a while back. Well, it now decorates the local landfill. Our LHS bought all the Amtech kits that were in storage after AMtech went under. They are now flooding the local contest raffle tables and nobody wants them. They sold them for 5 bucks a pop and had a hard time getting rid of them. I still have a JUnkers JU-88 from AmTech that I promised to build after I re-won 3 times after I donated it to our club raffle.

Joe,

Was this before or after the corrected fuselages produced by Accurate Miniatures?

Regards,

My -L came with the resin nose replacement and despite the surgery, I recall it being a pretty fun build...forgive these couple pics...

must have been before because I didnt have the resin parts.

Joe, only the F/L kits came with a resin nose. The P-40E had its fuselage replaced with a new mold from Accurate Miniatures. This eBay vendor is including it.

Regards,

You are 100% correct. The problem is that no one took care of making new molds for the resin parts so the P-40K (P-40M sprues with a resin tail) is simply a P-40M now. By combining the P-40E's short tail fuselage with the engine cowling of the F/L model, the early P-40F-1 can be represented.

I just ordered 2 P-40E and 2 P-40F/L kits from the vendor Gene got his from...

Gene,

Markings are painted and repainted as needed. The factory did include the national markings of the customer.

OD over Gray was used by the USAAC. Mostly for training. Those sent to Operation Torch received deset camouflage.

Here are a few sites to help you choose a scheme:

I just got my P-40 Lot (2x P-40E & 2x P-40F/L for $30) and am quite pleased. I plan to cut off and swap the tails on a P-40E with a P-40F/L to convert the P-40E to a long tail K and the P-40F/L to a short tail P-40F-1... I just need to find a sharkmouth scheme!
