Tamiya has always done that. They rotate stuff in and out of production, usually re releasing with additional sprues, etc at some point. They still have stuff from the 70s reappearing occasionally.
They were to discontinue their first 1/16 Tiger I last year, but the RC world went nuts and they reversed themselves.
It's just business and logistics.
Keep in mind, their paints, RC and mini 4WD racers are probably as big if not bigger than their styrene offerings now. I remember reading something like 60% of all AA batteries sold in Japan were used in their mini 4WDs. It's huge with a competition circuit.
