Wow!!

I remember the brush fires in Southern California during the summer of 1993 before moving to North Carolina. Up to that point those were some of the worst fires the state had ever seen, and it was nothing like those pictures!!

you can see on this map how we are a fair distance away, just scroll/ in to see the areas, but with this place with similar mountains just behind us you never know, I was very surprised to find burnt and blackened gum leaves in our backyard this afternoon, it is scarey stuff, winds here are gusting from 80 to 100 kph which throws burning embers starting new fires, this will be as biggy in Australia, the very sad and disgusting thing is, some are deliberately lit by scumbags beyond my state of thinking.

The real hot summer months are December, January and February, these are the traditional months of bushfires, being October it does make you think about things somewhat.

The smoke and ash must be horrible. We've had local fires that rained the stuff down like post-apocalyptic snow. Be safe, Phil!
 
Unfortunately fire bugs are a fact of life now. No consideration for anyone or anything as long as they get their jollies. Another problem we have up here is people flicking their cigarettes out the wind and setting fires. It seems now adays that smokers dont like to use their ashtrays because gasp they might get dirty or smell. Even walking down a street they flick them and dont try to put them out. Luckily this year was pretty wet. I'll say it again, stay safe.

Melbourne has been the opposite this year with very wet and cold weather com in from the Southern ocean.
I'm up in the Dance non ranges at the back of the city so we are lucky so far.

That kind of reminds me of the Diamond Bar fire that I almost got caught in a couple years back. Hang in there and keep your head down. I also see a lot of fires around Newcastle. That is where my sister and her husband were stationed when he was assigned there during the Air Force Officer Exchange Program. I hope all her friends are safe there too.

today there were 8 fire bombing aircraft flying over head for most of the day, going somewhere, then returning to base for refills I expect, never seen this in the area before.

Ian, that area where you live has had it's share of bad ones too I think, we are not threatened here but in this place we call Oz you never know, especially if the mountain goes up behind us then watching out for those dreaded embers falling around everywhere does make one wary of whet might happen.

30 degrees on Monday here for us, worse for the poor souls in the Blue Mountains with high temps and wind 70-100 kays predicted.

NSW Fire dept has issued a total fire ban in our area as well as many more.

At this time we have the house all closed up due to smoke all around, no breeze so it just hangs there, Saturday morning was bad with visibility down when driving, when we got to where we were going we looked back and the whole area where we live was totally blanketed by thick white smoke.

As you and I know, this is Australia!
