GWH 1/48 P61A Black Widow 'Glassnose'

Phil

Active member
Here is my latest purchase. I am impressed with this kit, have never purchased a GWH kit, it does have a couple of annoyances though which I will explain as we go through.

( Right click and select view to see the full sized photos)

It has a rotating top turret

Moveable control surfaces as shown by ''no glue'' icons.

Pe air brakes open or closed.

Flattened tyres.

Did GWH get alot of 'Flak' about their previous P61 kits? seems by the box info this has been addressed

The sprues.
Very crisp and clean, looks like very minimal clean up required, (double sprues not shown)

The kit guns look very nice indeed

Glasswork is pretty nice although the curved section - 3rd row 1st piece is a little distorted, not all that clear,
Future coat may improve? but not too bad

GWH gives four pieces for open or closed rad flaps - nice

the new opaque glass nose - beautifully packed and protected from damage

1st annoyance - let down - no rotating props - will have to fix that! or use a prop blur.

2nd annoyance - let down - no supplied counter weight as shown on instruction sheet

And a very nice bonus - a 14'' x 8 1/2 '' coloured print that begs to be mounted into a picture frame.

If this kit goes together as good as it looks - well done GWH.

another nice touch is all sprue bags are resealable.

Paint callouts are a tad confusing as GWH show an old GSI Creos corp colours - EG Olive Drab=C12
where as GSI is now owned/bought out by Mr Hobby? who's colours all state H letters.

And a question/help -
what is Zinc Chromate type 1 colour code GSI C351 and Zinc Chromate Yellow C352 - I think the later is Mr Hobby/Aqueous H 58 ??

All in all I think this is a great kit - I'll be starting this one in Feb, you will see my thoughts as I build this beast!

They did get a lot of complaints about the areas the addressed. I am happy to see that most were fixed.

Thanks for the look inside.

Phil there were several Zinc primers, I know of yellow and green, green being the more popular with modelers. Like most colors they varied greatly among manufacturers.

So..you done yet?? :popcorn

Thanks MP I'm finding that out right now!! what has me stumped is the callouts for the pilots seats for example - zinc chromate type 1 ( C 351)

and the other green for the floors and wheel wells (C352)

Type 1 is Green, type 2 is yellow. But you also have interior green, bronze green (grumman product who also used a light grey primer). The primers change from manufactures and even individual plants. Sometimes best guess works well

IMPS Stockholm has several articles about the different colors used.

Sometimes, restorations do help:

Here is a video so you can grab the model and make the correct sounds and motions:

I hope this helps some...

Yep, good picture of the mix of primers.

Interior Green overall, there's Zinc Green in various spots but most noticably on the part just below the right hand side window frame, and yellow zinc inside those relay boxes.

good stuff Saul (y)

I will be interested in following your build of this as I have the original release. Note that although Great Wall refers to them as "air brakes" these are actually spoilerons which acted in conjunction with the ailerons to give the P-61 a roll rate equivalent to a single engine fighter. These roll in and out of the wing and the way Great wall has you deploy them is just wrong.

Looking forward to this one-- I have their Devastator and look forward to building it in the new year...

Tops Saul thankyou so much for those great pics!

For the zinc chromate delema !!!!

i have searched the available ( close????!! ) colours available out here and came up with these

Vallejo not used their paint before - hope it mixes ok with tamiya thinners!

and this one

hopefully they will suffice.

Vallejo and Tamiya thinners? I'm not sure. I always just use water or windex. Can someone confirm this for Phil?

Thanks Bob, never tried vallejo paints before so checking what thinners to use is very wise!
