Flak 37 - natural metal?

Hey folks, I just got this in the mail...

guns_88_flak_37%7E0.JPG

Awesome kit and HUGE- my spares box will grow a little fatter when I'm done. While on line looking for reference pics for the paint, I saw a 1/6 kit some guy scratched, he hadn't painted it yet as he was still building.

made me wonder if there are any color photos of these BEFORE the paint shop? A link to the metals used would be helpful as I want to paint this in the gun's natural metal colors.

Any help? Thanks CR

Before the paint shop, the gun would be in primer (a reddish one for metal and a dark high heat resistant dark gray for the gun tube). If you wish to model it before the primer went on, then you will only be able to model one part as they were primed immediately before assembly (but not final assembly).

You will need to search factory photos and our own Bob Letterman had a factory diorama of the 88 posted here on Modelers' Alliance.

Regards,

I was afraid of the paint by assembly possibility- well it's not going to be a historical build, I'm gonna try to make a guess as to what metals each piece was cast in and go from there.

By the way, color would that red primer be? Rust maybe? Something else to learn..

Thanks for this^^ I'll look it up- If I can't find it I'll let you know Saul. Thanks again... CR

Greetings CR;

I have one of Dragon's Flak-18s & one of there 36/37s
they are excellent kits. They come with metal barrels
& my Flak-18 comes with two metal barrels. You can ither
build a flak-18, or a flak-36. You should enjoy this
model kit. Although, with all the parts you will be at it
awhile. When you get fustrated..... Remember.. how nice
she is going to look.... :mpup

Now the bad new........

I am afraid you are asking the imposable. The real things are
not made and painted the way modelers build, and paint there
models.

For example........ an artillery manufacturer has many different
departments & shops. The departments include the construction
of the many different parts that will be needed to build the
artillery piece.

Parts Manufacture:

As each piece is made, after clean-up it is immediatly sent
to one of the several paint shops.

Paint Dept:

It will be cleaned-up again and primmer painted. After the part
has dried the part will then receive two or three base coats of
paint. After drying the part will the go to one of the many
parts supply areas.

The build-up Dept:

This Dept. will have several different maintenance shops
assigned to it. This is where the shop, or shops will
procure the needed parts and over a period of time
assemble the artillery piece.

So you see the parts are already painted before
assembly ever takes place. There for, you will
never see a photo of a bare metal artillery piece,
unless it is a model.

I'm realizing this quickly- thanks for the post. What I'll do is paint and build in steps. I'll prime and do the finish coat BEFORE assembly on whatever parts I'm installing making the best guess as to what color the natural finish could be. The gun and the equiliberators (SP) come in unpainted aluminum and the chains are stainless, they may be left alone.

Either way, historically correct of not I think it would make for an interesting build, especially for a first build as this is my first 88!

Now the SECOND one? Thats different...According to the website this pic is public domain, feel free to snatch it...

look at the damage to this, the barrel got blue hot, so hot it sagged and the shield looks like it could be off its brackets. This gun is a casualty!
