Face painting help

Guys, what I need is an easy way to get rid of the blank look of just using enamel Humbrol 61 flesh to my 48th figure faces.

Just a fine pigment wash or similar just to bring out a little detail, I'm not worried about doing eyes etc cause I can hardly see the faces anyway!!! even using my reading glasses and mag glass to see what I'm doing.

Maybe a certain color in acrylic heavily thinned would help I think - thing is whatever I try the faces sometimes end up looking like the Black & White Minstrel show guys........

here is one example, not flatcoated, you can see the guy in green has a ghost face.

my latest, flat coated, but still with a too clean face.

Those are fine looking figures, I'm sure you'll get some pointers shortly Phil, I'm in on position to suggest anything.

But I would suggest reconsidering about the eyes, you'd be surprised how well the show up in 1:48.

Hey Phil,

So the faces are basecoated in Humbrols,..right ?

If so Acrylics are out the window as they will just bead on the surface unless you say that the face will be flatcoated.

What Humbrols do you have that are a dark red colour you can use that as a wash and then with clean brush and using only downward strokes wipe away wash from prominent areas leaving wash in recesses such as the eyes etc.

Hope these suggestions will help but i look forward to your reply

Hi Andy, yes I use Humbrol enamels for all figure painting.

The acrylics - I can flat coat the figures before any extra face or clothing ''weathering''

I have just about every tin of Humbrol enamel paint color.

On that note, if I used a Humbrol red as a wash - highly thinned - the face would have to be flat coated in any case as left as is wouldn't the wash mix with the enamel flesh and give him a pinkish face color?

For flatcoat I use Testors rattle 1260/ 1261 for all my flat/gloss coat applications.

I do have an extensive range of Gunze/Mr Hobby acrylic paint colors as well.

Just giving you as much info on the supplies I have.

Heres what I suggest

Find a figure that youre not going to use anytime soon and practice the wash method on the face
that way you can see how the paint behaves

Id say that if you flat coated already then the wash will remain the same colour and wouldnt mix with your basecoat seeing as you have another layer over the top anyway

Also if you have a few faces then try the acrylics out and see how that goes,.busy right now but Ill be online later on :)
