Hi Bob, Not sure what effect you where looking for, but I'm not seeing what I think you wanted. I think if you had of masked each panel and done your colouring, especially making the hatches and doors stand out, you might have gotten a better effect. Because you sprayed in swaths it kind of blends in a way where the effect is lost. Could be my eyes or monitor though.

That's the problem James, it's not so much restricted to the panels. Again, check out that wiki picture.
you see dark and light areas that are not restricted to the panels. I guess this is caused by crew rubbing against the aircraft, sort of polishing down the metal some. I do intend to hit it some more with other colors like around the gunports and the tailpipe. Maybe I should focus on doing this as a post shade situation, never had much luck with preshading.

Not sure what was in the pipe but it wasn't the tailpipe you were working on!
The blotches are confined to the areas rubbed by the crew. The steel gun panels would get coated in grease to prevent gun powder residue build up. Hence the brownish tinge to them. There are dull and whitish aluminum on aircraft left in natural metal but not waxed or treated so it oxidizes.
Some NMF masters paint a panel at a time varying the color a hint. Then they polish in only one direction to impart a grain to the 'metal' panel.

Brown tint I can do around the gun ports, was going to use Steel color, that's what it looks like to me.
Thing I see is the panels are not the clear cut demark for tonal changes, Course you can see a big change around the gun ports. but the area below the canopy is made up of several panels yet the tonal changes are not confined to the panel.
As I told James on PM, Guess what i'm thinking about is the way others do forced shadows and painting with static lighting in mind (it's your fault CHUCK!). You look at a NMF it's completely uniformed, you know the metal is all one color but if you really look, you see reflections of colors varying with the sheen of the surface, the grain and it's environment. That's what I"m going for..I think...
Also when I wash the panel lines it may break it up some, shoot, just playing around, looked pretty good with the Tie Died Mottle camo.

Hey Bob gonna put my $.25 . I'm on board with Saul. Side of canopy are areas where crew member have rubbed up against it as well as some other maintenance areas. The gun panel was most likely steel but what he said about the grease is correct.
Also one thing he hinted on was the grain of the aluminum. You can give it a different look by masking and polishing at a 90% from the other metal pieces.

Well....I tinted the Polished Aluminum with transparent blue and some with yellow...not exactly what I wanted to do but I think I'm getting the hang of Heat Distress!
I think I'm going to come back with the Polished Aluminum and touch up a bit to break up the large sections. make it less uniformed looking.

Oh I didn't mean it that way. I think the plane looks great and the tinting adds to the effect of the different metal shading. I meant the color of the tinting would work for car exhaust where the chrome changes color because of the heat.
I know, i was waiting on the first person to say that...
As soon as I ever figure out how to do it, need to get some more colors for that, they have several now.

Using different tones of grays as a base, would that make a difference enough to see? Just wondering.
It sure would Jeff, any alteration to the base will show through as long as you don't build up too much cover.

I'm happy now. I hit some polished aluminum over some of the larger spots breaking up the patterns. Making it look more random.
