F-86 Sabre

OUTSTANDING!!!! WOW the BMF technique. I am TOTALLY stealing that. Consider it nabbed!! But then you have plenty up your sleeve don't you!

When i first started proper model making a couple of years ago after a 40 year break... there was a group build of F86 on.. I think it was modelling madness ( can i say that here :) )

The RAF brought quite a few F86 as a stop gap between the early jets like the Meteor and vampire while they waited for the later hunters and supersonic kit to come on stream.

We have the oldest flying F86 here at Duxford..

I have been slowly cataloguing my photos i have taken over the years and i can find them now :)
I think the RAF versions were Canadian ?? from memory.

Yes they were, both slatted and unslatted. So many of the ones that weren't passed on to various allies under the MAP, ended-up in open storage at Ringway Aerodrome (now Manchester International Airport) and Hawarden, both around 45mins drive from where I used to live. Many years before my time of course !!

It's the build that never ends!

Truth be known, I started over.

Here's what I got now.

Tamiya X1 black gloss for the base, multiple coats. Two coats of Alclad Clear Base (NOT the Aqua Clear) then Alclad Polished Aluminum

I'm close to being happy with this one! Now just find some decent decals.

Ian I don't know yet, I know I'm not going to put those sucky decals from Academy on it.

U'stood - think it would suit a Skyblazers scheme, that way you could retain most of that superb finish.... just a thought, friend :coolio

Yeah Mike, I polished one side of the lower wing but saw no appreciable difference between the two sides. So I figure I got the AB loaded let's git'er done.

Ian I may just do a clean off the showroom floor scheme. No unit markings or anything. Not sure yet.

Holy Cow!!! I need my Sunny's!!!

Awesome finish there MP!!

I'm so tempted to try that finish!

Just remember Phil, coat, polish, repeat. You're basically trying to build up a base that is like that of car modelers. I did maybe 4 coats of black, polishing between coats, then 2 or 3 clear coats. Then used a very wide spray pattern with the AlcladII, fast and heavy but fast enough to just leave a misting of Alclad..that make sense? :idonno

Modelling gods are going to deny me an F86.

So I had a Tally Ho day yesterday when I got a hold of the F86 decals at the show. Sat down this evening and started working on getting those nasty stripes on. I did have the forethought to get some exam gloves on so not to mar the finish. :smack didn't help.

This stuff has been on there for what, 2-3 weeks. Started coming off under thumb pressure. I didn't have this problem with the Thunderjet. I don't know what's up with this High Shine stuff. I know I didn't have this problem with the other AlcladII products like on the Mig.

Hate to do it to yet another but I give up. I'm nearly out of Polished Aluminum and don't want to buy another bottle.

I'm starting the P47 tomorrow, using BMF on it! :pilot
