Hey folks... didn't know you'd started a thread on the 'quake - Sincerely thanks for the concern, really is appreciated.

Yep we're all fine here but I tell y'all it was a h*ll of a shake. I live on the west coast in the middle of the North Island which is hundreds of miles from the epicentre on the South Island. At four mins past midnight we heard a scratching sound which was the paintings moving on their hooks, then the wardrobe doors slid open and all the clothes were swaying on their hangers (like a scene from Scooby Doo).

Then we heard/felt the whole house rumbling and shaking - I ask you to remember we are a whole Island and hundreds of miles away - we woke the kids and made them hunker-down under the main front door as the lintel there is the strongest point in the house. Then the power went out.

TVNZ link

Initially Geonet announced it as a 6.6 but was revised later to a 7.5 and then (as the link points out) it was found to be two quakes virtually on top of each other. This morning they're saying that FOUR faults shifted at between 12-15km depth one of them by 10 metres. At the moment, and somewhat surprisingly only two people have died, I'd guess that this is because it occurred in the middle of the night so where there has been structural damage nobody was around !!

Thanks for your thoughts, folks and just to re-iterate my family and I are fine.

Best

Ian.

Good to hear Ian.

I've only experienced one quake, that was like a year, two years ago. Very minor, think it only hit 3 if that, what struck me was the sound, very strange to hear a quake and the epicenter was probably 30 miles from us.

Keep safe!

I also had been wondering if any of our modelers were in trouble glad Your OK Ian and glad y'all started this thread ...

Glad to hear you and yours are well Ian. It's too easy to just "assume" everything is ok.
