De Havilland Vampire

Awesome thanks Saul. Have a 1/32 vac coming of the FB-5 which will have to be converted to a F-3. Thinking of this scheme.

The first prototype of the "Vampire Fighter-Bomber Mk 5" (FB.5), modified from a Vampire F.3, carried out its initial flight on 23 June 1948. The FB.5 retained the Goblin III engine of the F.3, but featured armour protection around engine systems, wings clipped back by 1 ft (30 cm), and longer-stroke main landing gear to handle greater takeoff weights and provide clearance for stores/weapons load. An external tank or 500 lb (227 kg) bomb could be carried under each wing, and eight "3-inch" rocket projectiles ("RPs") could be stacked in pairs on four attachments inboard of the booms. Although an ejection seat was considered, it was not fitted.

So, don't add armor, lengthen wings, shorten main landing gear, no external ordnance, no ejection seat (only a bucket) and you have an F3!

I found a CD I may order myself (the store is in Brooklyn, not far from my work)

Thanks Saul. I've dealt with them on ebay and have been quite happy. I also found the 1 book I wanted, but I'm not sure I'll get what I want. For some reason it ranges in price from $1.00 to $100.00. Well we'll see what being cheap does for me.

Hi Paddy, I asked for ref material in the help section https://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/help-me/136155-lf-vampire-refs#136155 . This thread is a result as Saul posted some ref photos and then helped me find some books etc that would be of use. Jump in though if you know of some good refs, I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Ah thanks James, i found the other thread now you bumped it :)

first place i always look as ai contribute photos to them is airliners.net. Here you will get a lot of reference pictures of anything. There are often 100s of pages so set the page to 50+ at the bottom and open the pictures and click large at the top of the page.

Link

there is a lot of similar pictures but at about No.260 of 800 i found this so its worth clicking through the lot

there's an FB6 interior at about No.820 (y)

Most vampires that survive are T11 versions, T as in trainer :)

In fact i think a majority of the 4000 built were trainers.

Pretty bird. I remember many moons ago helping to sit one on its tail to drain the pipe. Pilot had a failed start so we had to empty any fuel that pooled in the back end to prevent a wet start. Still a nice blow torch when he fired her up. Fell in love with the Vampire right quick. I'm starting to get pumped up about this even if it is a vac form and I've got alergiers to them

If you have the chance to get onto a Warpaint Series #27, this is a real good one about the Vampire

Well a funny thing happened on the way to the computer this evening. I went searching my armour books for a SPG book and as I went through them there was a white spined book that looked wrong. Pulled it part way out and what did my amazed eyes see? Warpaint 27 de Havilland Vampire. This is one I got at the model contest in Edmonton last year. Something must have been buzzing in the back of the old noggin to have bought it on spec :D Very happy now.
James

I love it wen that happens, and hate it when it happens again with the same book (duplicates).
