Last sunday I went to the Roerdriehoek museum [Battle for the Roer triangle museum] in the little town of MONTFORT,here in the Netherlands.
The museum is dedicated to the battle fought in January 1945 in the area I live in.
Many of you will never heared about this battle, but it is very interresting if your 'into history' to check out.
The museum is situated on a hay loft,so climbing stairs is alas mandatory.I have a knee problem so it was no picnic to get there! :pinch:
Basicly the museum is a collection from one guy, collected over a 15 till 20 years time period.
After asking the owner if it is ok to take pictures,he asked were it is for,so I told him,and got his ok!
So here you are....
Check out the color difference on the 'breadbags'.
The well known 'Frits helmet' painted in a fieldgrey color.
Compare the camera to the camera's used today! :woohoo:
The above rifle is a Russian one,it was used by the Germans during the battle for the roer triangle as a 'Beute Waffe'.
Many British items, since many British troops were involved,my village I live in was liberated by Scottish troops!
The British 'Pixie suit'.
January 1945 was COLD and freezing and there was also some snow.
So the U.K. troops made great use of these snowsuits.
The museum is packed with all kinds of stuff, and the owner can tell you stories about every single item found there.
Guess I stayed there for several hours,...imagin that for a room not greater then an average livingroom. :woohoo:
The German paratroopers almost fought untill the last bullit in the nearby village of St.Joost,
The British had to call in the help of the flametrowing Churchill Crocodil tanks to break the German defence.
Ofcourse you can find some U.S. stuff in the museum.
For the ones with an interest in the history of this battle, there is a great book about it by the authors:Har Gootzen & Kevin conner.
Here is a link to order directly from Erskine hospital.
