If you are doing the white wash over the green, it would wear off with rain and other affects, it would chip, but usually only on leading edges of things like wings and tail surfaces. Also the white wash would probably not be applied underneath. Why bother as it could not be seen from the air. It would be applied around existing markings, but only lightly covering them or not at all. Ponder on it, try and find reference photos to give ideas, and visualize how to apply it to your model. A little planning can make a big difference.

Going to try the hair spray number, do I decant some into a jar and use a brush?

Yes been having a look, I know the wear and tear on tanks and vehicles, but this is the aircraft I have done like this....

I would imagine they painted the underside because a dark aircraft against a white snow laden sky would be an easy target . The net is your friend for things like this. All i would say is they were usually only part white so wing tips might still be green or sections of the fuselage

Basically what ever you do no one is really going to be able to say...thats not right

@paddy excellent photos! Remember though the undersides were almost always lighter. As in the last photo, the undersides are a light blue to match with sky. If it was above you would see the shadow against sky or lighter cloud cover, so again, probably no applied to bottom, but to sides and wing tops.
