I read about his passing on Christmas day, and it noted his military service, and I was just blown away.
Took part in the D-day invasion, of which he was the only surviver of his Army unit. Killed several Germans before being wounded in the leg. Later in the war, he was bayoneted by a German soldier, before killing the German w/ a rock. Was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, and while as a POW, managed to survive a prisoner massacre by the Germans.
And like Mike said, awarded the Silver Star & 3 Purple Hearts.
The article also stated that after the war, he refused to talk about it, "too many bad memories".
Absolutely a hero, and worth every amount of praise he ever received.
God Speed.
