Alclad 2

Getting ready to use this for the first time- I'm going for an overall silver, but the bottom I would like to try something different. Can I blend Alclad 2 with another color like blue to change the tint?

I certainly hope so... Any comments?

It would be best to alter the base colors instead of mixing AlcladII, unless you have some of the tinted colors they make. I think it would be too hit and miss on mixing other brands. AlcladII has a line of tints that work really well as an overcoat.

I've played around with alcladII base on a couple of recent builds, the F86 I went a little wild on the base, the Mig 15 I used nothing but AlcladII products and primers, check them out.

KRYPTO ,

I would check out th Transparent Blue from AlClad. I just finished a Car & Shot it with AlClad Chrome , then ALClad Aqua Gloss Clear ( to protect th Chrome)* & Then Shot AlClad Transparent Red over it ! I think it came out lookin Pretty Good.

Check th Car section ... I'll post it now. - https://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/lets-be-civil/79853-opel-admiral-pre-war

* As suggested by the AlClad rep.

I would shoot th Car in th Silver ( Chrome ? ) then mist a couple of coats Clear Acrylic coats on it to protect it against th next coat of AlClad, perhaps tape off & then Shoot th Transparent Blue along th bottom & them Clear Coat Gloss again.

Here ya go Chip, the dried out bottle I was telling you about.

I didn't leave that much pigment inside that bottle, the bottom of it is much more clear than the top. But you see what I was talking about in what you should see when painting from inside out, or is it outside in?

I'm not into normal vehicles, but that red looks great!

And it's funny you mentioned the Transparent blue- I saw that on Alclads site and decided I would use that for the bottom spider pattern and then regular aluminum or steel overall.
hopefully I'll have the paint this week. ($$$)

And Moon, thanks for posting that picture, that looks like a Co2 bottle!

Missed something- the Alclad rep ^^^^ suggests a clear akryl. coat between the lacquer coats. Is this an Alclad product? Or can i just buy a bottle or 3 of Tamayia clear?

This thing is 14 inches across, and two pieces of that, but at least the body is smooth. I don't know how to judge coverage because (1) I have never used Alclad and (2) I havn't used the airbrush beyond playing with lines and ect. NOOB! lol

I'm thinking 4 bottles, 1 of the blue and three of the Aluminum (or steel)

They have an acrylic clear coat. Aqua Klear, sort of their version of Future but better. seems to dry harder to me.

I think you're going to find that the Alclad covers very well. It took me a long while to run that bottle out.

Future does not exist anymore! Cant find it anywhere.

Masking- The bottom is of course transparent, and will be painted from the inside, the outside tear drops will be painted from the outside after priming according to Alclad's site.
For simplicity I was going with clear contact paper to cover the entire bottom, then i have some templates of the teardrops made up with a copier- I'll tack those on into place and then mask the edges with clear tape (to give a good edge after the cut - then cut the forms out and paint.

I'm wondering if the Alclad is harsh enough to eat the contact paper? I get one shot at this. I guess after it's done I'll have to name the ship the Moon Puppy. lol

Actually i have already come up with the name, it's to be called 'Shalla Bal' anyone know who SHE was? lol

Future is now -Pledge Floor Finish With Future Shine- same thing just a new name. I had that problem with Klear (Uk version of future).

All the best! ;)
Dusan.

Dusan, I think that's why AlcladII is making this product.

Chip, AlcladII is harsh if you let it pool up, light misting coats is what you want, it dries pretty quickly but I would not let it buildup too much.

CHIP,

I've found, that with th entire "ALClad System" , each "layer " is super thin. I painted the Admiral in Their Black Primer/micro filler ( drying time 48 hours) , Gloss Black Base ( drying time 6 days - to ensure it had completely cured) , I then misted 2 coats of Chrome ( any more & it's gonna start to "haze" on you { drying time 48 hours} ) , misted 2 coats of the Aqua Klear Gloss ( drying time 48 hours ) I taped off the Grill & body Chrome & I misted 3-4 coats of the Transparent Red , 2 misted coats of Aqua Klear . All of these "layers" of paint are super thin .... in some spots it was too thin  & showed some blemish that was just barely part of the original finish. I was actually surprised exactly How thin the laters of paint are. It's lacquer based &I don't think it would harm the contact paper too much. For th simple fact that you are not saturating the paper with paint ??

With some of that inside painting you are going to "back" the Transparent blue . You could think about any of Their colors , pretty much any type of sheen that you are after.

I agee with :mpup , I like that Aqua Kleer & it does seem to have a harder finish. You can see the difference between the Aqua Kleer & Future, Pledge, etc. I painted the Interior of the Admiral & shot 2 coats of Future on the seats & door panels. & Aqua Kleer everywhere else on the car.

Here's an example -
Pimp_Ma_Tiger_I.JPG

I've misted 2 coats of chrome

2 coats of Transparent Red , testing to see how it reacted with Low -Tact Tape ,

I think you can see how thin the coats are. You can see the reflection of the Running Boards in the Door panel !

I'm lookin forward to seeing th model !

Thanks, the raw form is under Kitbash in the Sci-fi section here, I won't post anymore until I'm putting the alclad on the main halves.

Mike get the AlcladII Klear product. Comes in different finishes. I think it's better than Future as I always thought Future ended up looking thick.

Bob I use Alclad over Tamiya acryl gloss black, fast drying time(and Klear/Future as a top coat/even as a base coat sometimes no problem at all, the only problem I had was to find Klear), and have been very happy!
MM acryl gloss black is also ok as a base coat, but gray, white are also good bases under Alclad chrome.

@Panzerace: Great Job with chrome :ro:

All the best!
Dusan.

@DUSAN ,

Thanx Bro !! It was a lil touch & go .. when they say mist 2 coats .. They mean it. otherwise it will start to Cloud up ....

The AlcladII will cloud up, pool up. When it starts to pool up the lacquer carrier starts to eat at the base you're putting it on and cause it to dull out and cloud. Once you start squirting the stuff you'll see what we're talking about.

Yeah...definitely be careful...I think the stuff is actually thinner than water...make sure your paint cap is on your airbrush!

KRYPTO ,

Another thing to consider .. it hasn't been brought up ... I was shooting the AlClad @ 12-15psi. This aides to keep from pooling. ( IMHO)

Like :mpup mentioned. Once you get it and take it for a test drive ...... You'll see what were talkin' about !
