A quiet day in the forest

B) :popcorn ;)

Hey Willem,
your ground work has really been lifted with the additions you made. The trees are perfectly placed and balance well with the ambulance at the other end. They also add a great perspective through the side as shown in your 3rd photo.

I really think that you have nailed the layout for this (even with all the different sizes of detail)
just great!

Ian.

Tanx for the kind words :)

And a small update, the orderley.

Because this is my first camo dress ever, comments are welcome !

The bike looks good to me, and so are the trousers (Italian pattern)
I am unsure about the schmock, it is a difficult pattern: the plane tree.
With so many colors its hard to bring in the highlights and shadows.
Useful help is appreciated !
And I dont like the hair of the guy, gotta do something about it, dont know what yet.

For a first attempt on painting camo-clothes it's not bad at all.

(y) on the bike, you have nailed that one.

Tanx for the friendly words Ron, but it is not really good either.
When I see Le2 fine paintings in his Monastery diorama....

Anyway I was not happy with the result and I dived some deeper in this.
I realize now it was not a good idea for a beginner to take the difficult plane-tree (from boxart) as example.

There are about a dozen German camo-patterns, more or less complicated, and the Italian is by far the easiest, but still
very common.
So I stick to that for the first time.

Further I learned that I should not bother about shadows and highlights and leave that to the advanced figure
painters, they know what they are doing.

After painting I should only give a very dark pinwash in the seems and only the deepest creases.

So off went the paint and redone.
Must be satisfied for the moment.

Pics will come next time :)

Willem,

A excellent first go at camo and let me tell you that camo is still a pain even for the more experienced painters

The only thing that i would suggest this time round is before you start the actual camo is to paint around the details in black, that way you can determine the creases material seams and especially on the smock the foliage loops

The hair can be sorted by doing lighter and lighter shades on the top

Nip over to the figure section and have a look at some of our great figure painters and see how they do it

as i say great first job !

:hmmm Willem don't be too hard on yourself, you have to start somewhere sometime (your work is very promising as is you skill at dioramas).

I will garantee that of all the figure painters you look up to, started out painting as good,as you. Then with practice they got better.

The only way to get better is to: ask-learn-do and after a while people will be asking you, how you do "it" (y)

I like it! OK the hair does need work but I'd be proud of an outcome like this. Self critic is always the most harsh, you see room where you need to grow so the next one is going to be ubercool! :coolio

The last scene: the Tiger tank.
Yes I know, there are many better out there, but it is the best I can do right now.

I builded this separate for some good reasons:
- Not enough room on my shelf
- easier to work on
- not really belonging to the total dio, but it is the same landscape, so why not
I can always add it permantly with little groundwork on the seem or leave it like this.

Last tings todo are two relaxed tankers, machinegun and a few other small things.

As always: if someone has ideas for easy improvements, dont hold them for yourself, I like to learn !

That makes sense. :)
Like the lay-out of the dio! (y)
