2024 Plastic Surgeons Posts

The likeness is stunning. :rotf
Quite regal and dignified, don't you think?

The Rhiner-sauce-eros is done!
There's a rumor Teresa's next crochet critter will be a Raccoon. Stay tuned to see if he has a cigar!

A Hy-Vee customer asked Teresa if she knew anyone that could paint and decal HO scale Burlington Northwestern rail coaches.
Fred is a Vietnam US Army vet. 101st, 3rd of the 506th PIR. I could not refuse. Fred provided primer, paint and decals. Hot soapy water and a surface conditioning pad was step 1.
This was my first go-around with AK surface primer. Acrylic Polyurethane seems odd. It didn't spray too badly. It is a huge pain to clean out of the airbrush. I don't think I will use any more of the AK. More on "The Challenger" coaches as they progress.

That's a whole new ball game painting the rolling stock. I've noticed those folks are applying weathering techniques now, use to be you'd see everything pristine.

These will clean and fresh with really cool gold leaf decals. Here is the reference coach. Not too shiny, careful!
Fred's dad worked for the Chicago And North Western Railroad for 46 years. As a kid, he rode the rails free of charge.
Painting Brass is different!
Thanks again for looking in!

It's almost a shame to cover up the pretty brass. Floquil Reefer Gray enamel for primer. Scalecolor Pullman green for the overall color.
It smells like it will spray rill nice! :yipee:

That rocks Chris! I love the crocheted Rhino! Beautiful! Maybe her Raccoon will have a honkin' Big Gun instead!

Beautiful work on the train car; that is awesome that you are doing that for someone!

:lol::lol::lol:
It's fun to Play Trains with Fred. AND I get to put the shiny, gold decals on without have to monkey with much else. I really enjoy decals!

Paint that says "Danger" on it! This is gonna be great!

First coat. It will need 2 at least!

The poster came! We framed it right up for Easter weekend delivery. I found an appropriate t-shirt for Tatum to wear in the picture we will return, framed to the Cutter. 8X10's wiil go to other family members. I continue to be blown out of the water by these young Coast Guard people.
Their generosity and their sense of honor. My steely, old eyes get misty every time I speak of this.

In the far-flung reaches of east central Wisconasin, satellite Surgeon, Mark Karolus has been building and painting tank models to populate the Wisconasin Maritime Museum's 1/60 scale mahogany Landing craft display. A June 6th exhibit is in the works in Manitowoc and my esteemed ship model making friend has gone over to the "Dark Side". :frantic:
These are 1/56 armor models and should work well for the display. He tells me the M-18 Hellcat has "nose art".

So it does!
Mark is enjoying his sojourn into Allied Armor. I hope he "recovers" soon, but the prognosis is not bright. I am told quite a few landing craft were built at the Sturgeon Bay yard. More recently, the new Staten Island ferry was launched there. He didn't mention how many fairies there were in New York. I imagine the number is great.

4 April Meeting post:

It looks as if we had more members at this meeting than we did at last weekends annual contest. As usual, the meeting following a contest was consumed by details, dollar amounts, corrections, anecdotes and a general "atta-boys" all around for a successful job done.

Aimee Lotz related her story of the "Al Incident". We hope to find a way to advise the American Legion National office about the oafish behavior of the membership of Post 396 and lodge a proper, official complaint against the "Village Idiots of Bondurant". Seeking the commander of Iowa District 6 is key.
The good news is that we will not be returning to the "cozy" Legion Hall. The next show may be in Nevada or perhaps even in Dayton, Iowa.

Ronnie Schultz brought quite a collection of modified shiny models. The '58 El Camino was an attention getter. The Nomad was neet too!

Ray finished his 1/48 Vought Corsair f4U-4 in the markings of Guy Bordelon. A Korean war Navy ace.
Carton Burger's 1/48 Monogram He-111 is looking quite airborne. Colton Routh is working on a M-36 and a Sherman, both in 1/35th scale.
Mike Rasmussen is building a vintage Monogram B-26 Invader kit. The 2nd airplane model I ever built many moons ago.

Francisco progresses on his 1/72 US Coast Guard Island class WPB. It looks very much like a 110-foot cutter, don't you agree?
Stalwart, long-time Plastic Surgeons treasurer George Stevens announces his resignation and his plan for he and Lady Stevens to "Return Home" to Colorado next August. George has done a fine job in his treasuring and as a club member and contest enthusiast. He is also the man that filled in as a father figure for me after my own Dad died. He was REALLY good at that too.
He will be missed.
I might not have taken this bit of news very well. That's all I have to say about that.

Decals: Gold leaf stripes and graphics printed on a continuous film sheet. "The Challenger" graphic is a regular waterslide decal. The stripes are beautiful! It will be a shame to flat these these to match the example coach. Still some fine tuning to do, but otherwise this project goes forward quite well.

Teresa's scratch built (tee-hee!) Female Heffalump! She seems very cheery! No woozles so far!
Thanks for laughing along!

I finished applying Fred's decals tonight. The gold leaf stripes have a disconcerting habit of "squirming" as the Solva-Set cures, so they aren't perfect, but they are done. A little more Solva-Set and a semi-gloss clear coat will finish these vintage beauties off.

In other news,

In the wake of Russell's car-model windfall, we are composing a model tool box for him. We got one that locks, so his rotten little brother won't easily steal his supplies and tools. Paints will begin with acrylics. A battery powered paint mixer is on it's way. Airbrush? Not quite yet.
We will need to go shopping for colors he wants for his (Sob, sniff) Car models. (BOO-Hoo-hoo hoo)

Living in Marion, he will be a Fartin' Fleas club member. He will be in good company with men I admire and respect.
