1/72 Revell Flower Class Corvette H.M.C.S. Galt

Looking cool Peter. Quite interesting watching this. The best book bar none for This boat is Flower Class Corvettes. John Lambert & Les Brown http://www.amazon.ca/Flower-Class-Corvettes-Lambert-Brown/dp/1848320647/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1369508984&sr=1-1&keywords=1848320647
If you can find it in a library or buy it. Very helpful.
This is another good book, but more targeted http://www.amazon.ca/gp/search?index=books&linkCode=qs&keywords=0851779751
This one might be interesting, but what a god aweful price. http://www.amazon.ca/gp/search?index=books&linkCode=qs&keywords=1551250527

James

Ahoy there James.

I'll check the local library and see if any of those books are there.

My biggest problem is that I started converting the engine room cover BEFORE I found out that H.M.C.S. Galt was one of the 80 UNMODIFIED Flower Class Corvettes. I now have a list of all the ship names and whether they were Unmodified = 80, Modified = 45. Then there were the enhanced Flower Class Corvettes.

Waiting for glue on the engine room casing to cure.

Also sanding the hull of my modified 27' Whaleboat so that it's smooth. After I get that done I'll apply a number of thin strips of styrene to give it the clinker-built look. I used the bow and the stern of one of the kit boats. I've seen instructions for a 27' Whaleboat online but those modellers all built theirs with two pointed ends and any photo shows a transom for the tiller.

Here's what I have done so far on my whaleboat conversion.

Carley Floats Racks.

Ahoy there.

I've been working on the motor and the relocation of the radio gear to get rid of some radio interference. I've had the model out on the local pond a few times since the last update to test the new motor and the radio gear locations. The new motor has more power than what a 16 knot actual speed vessel had but the extra power is needed to bring the model back to shore if a brisk offshore wind picks up.

The last couple of days has seen me working on the racks for the six Carley Floats carried by H.M.C.S. Galt and many other Canadian Flower Class Corvettes. Each rack held 2 floats stacked atop each other. Two were located amidships on the port side and two each near the ends on the cabin at the rear of the ship on both the port and starboard sides.

I ended up having to basically scratch-build these Carley Floats mounts. Here are three images. They show one assembled mount for the aft section of the ship, one exploded mount for the opposite side and the port amidships floats mount prior to assembly.

I must say that I really do feel sorry for anyone who buys the recently released Premium Edition of this kit since it's at least twice the price of the regular kit that I have and Revell never bothered to clean up the molds and thus a lot of parts are nearly useless.

Here're the three images.

Comments are appreciated and welcomed.

Very cool. Did you see that Dragon are going to release a 1/350 Flower Class Destroyer?
James

I have this kit as well and I started it several years ago but have never got around to finishing it. Just trying to get the four piece hull to look half decent was a major undertaking. You just might inspire me to pick it up again. :coolio

I must say though that the little bit of research that I did do on these ships made my head spin. The number of modifications made both during construction and after is mind boggling. I saw your references James on an earlier post and I will have to look those up.

Ahoy there James.

Thanks. No, I didn't know about that Dragon release. Do you have a link to info about it?

BTW, the Flower Class Corvettes were no destroyer. The FCC had a top speed of only 16 knots compared to a destroyer around @30 knots. I'd love to see a 1/350 scale Tribal Class destroyer that could be built as H.M.C.S. Haida.

I had to look very carefully at the few images I found online of H.M.C.S. Galt. Most of them are of her as she appeared at different times and the aft 2 pounder 'bandstand' assembly is considerably different in some images at they were ofher as she appeared late in the war. H.M.C.S. Galt started out as s short forecastle ship and had the forecastle lengthend later.

Corvette K-225 stars H.M.C.S. Kitchener and is a great film to watch for ideas.

Aren't U the clever son-of-a-gun!!
The Flower class Corvettes were converted Whaling vessels. Nice smooth round hulls, lots of extra topside equipment. I shouldn't be too concerned about a bit of list, as almost no 2 vessels were equipped exactly the same.
The old Matchbox kit swims!! I laughed so hard, I almost needed new socks!!

Well Done! and Harrumph!!

And it was said they'd roll on wet grass.

I put a 7.2 volt (brushed) 380 motor in my model and she now has lots of power to buck a headwind with. With the throttle wide open in calm water she's faster than a Tribal Class destroyer at flank speed. I've put a limiter (block of styrene) on the transmitter at the scale 16 knots point.

The rudder servo died the other day and I've just installed blocks on the hull sides to attach the rear deck to with screws so that if it happens again I can get that deck off easily.

The third reference listed above covers these changes, as does the second. I have both of those but lack the first reference. My Grandpa served on the HMCS Chambly and I have three of these kits to build. I also gave up for a long time after assembling the hulls.

Who makes the aftermarket sets? Can you provide me with some links?

Thanks.

I don't use after market stuff because I detest PE stuff especially on a radio-controlled model because PE stuff gets knocked off far too easily.

I've also stopped buying books in order to build just one model since books are expensive for me, they take up a lot of room and they have little resale value where I am.

I build for fun and as long as my model resembles the real thing then I'm happy. I don't aim for a museum quality replica of the real thing as it appeared at a given moment in history. To do that takes a great deal of time, skill and money.

The model is currently laid uo getting new electronics. The old radio I used is no longer supported and new servos, speed controls etcetera are for a different frequency. Therefore i had to change out everything.

Oh I understand that, I just thought you said you knew that there were a lot of sets out for this kit and I was hoping you or someone reading this thread could point me in the right direction.
