The Sikorsky S-61R or HH-3 Helicopter served our forces in 2 guises. The USAF HH-3E Jolly Green Giant combat rescue helicopter and later on, the US Coast Guard HH-3F Pelican long range SAR helicopter. My USCG version retains her long range external fuel tanks. An absolutely accurate Pelican can be made by removing the external tanks.
By design, the S-61R uses the same main & tail rotor as the speedy, well known US Navy Sikorsky S-61/SH-3 Seaking helicopter. Lucky for me, Five Star makes beautiful P/E parts for these assemblies!
Now, a guy can clip off the main rotor blades at the hub and install them in the existing Pelican main rotor hub and be a happy helicopter guy.
OR!
Five Star Models instructions can be followed to assemble a convincing 1/350 scale S-61R main rotor.

I used a .040 copper wire main shaft and clipped off the rotor head cap and drilled out the center of the transmission to make a good fit.
Save the rotor head cap.

Install the included strut for the tailplane, rescue hoist and nose gear before you go too much further! It is a good idea to finish the paint job apply your decals before installing the main & tail rotors. Decals include markings for 6 markings documented USCG HH-3F helicopters. This one is 1497 from Air Station San Diego. She's the one that rescued Maverick and recovered Goose' body in the original TOPGUN movie.
The Seaking main p/e main gear is provocative, but for our 1/350 purposes, we will use the existing LPP cast kit mains.
Sanding off the nose radar, adding a aerial refueling boom and Jolly Green paint will yield an convincing 1/350 HH-3E Jolly Green Giant.
"Rhino. Where are the decal markings for the Jolly Green?"
During the Vietnam war, USAF Rescue helicopters most often operated without markings. Air Force rescue crews paid little attention to politics or borders. The unmarked helicopters offered an amount of public plausible deniability, should they be shot down on the wrong side of a line on a map.
No decals were required, see?!
Thanks for looking in!
