1/350 US Coast Guard HH-65C Dolphin Helicopter

Thank you, esteemed Pup!
The HH-3F with p/e main rotor is still in the works but the goal was finishing the Big Cutter kit helicopters and fine tuning the decals I made for them. I got derailed by the HO rail coaches and an effort to finish the 1/350 "3 Mile Limit" project in time for our show.

This kid, Deston, (SmarterEveryDay) has been making a YouTube series about the US Coast Guard. His enthusiasm is contagious, and I like his style.

Just saw this Chris, those are looking great!
Thanks Warren! It took me 2 tries to fine tune the dinky decal sheets, but I'm certain the 2.0 version will compliment these little beauties in a very satisfying way in the Big Cutter kit.

This you might be interested in as well. I bought one of these1/350 Caravan amphibians for running errands, medical emergencies and light Caribbean charter flights.

Picking it up to seal her with Future clear, it began to just break up. I contacted him to express my displeasure. The designer says the tan fine detail plastic is brittle and the attachment points for the floats and ladder might need reinforcing. WOW! This guy is a fargin' GENUIS!
In this scenario, I would have sent a replacement immediately with apologies. These 3D print guys may be skilled, but they know squat about customer service.
As always, you can make up your own mind, but I advise against buying one of these brittle pieces of sheyit.
The 208a was headed to the burn trash when I remembered something.............

I don't like to lose.
Painstaking drilling of fuselage and floats ensued. .015 copper phos. rod struts, turbine exhaust and chin scoop added.
TACAN/LORAN blade antenna and other bitty busted-off bits replaced. Ridiculous over-scale propeller blades GONE! I drilled for a UHF whip so I can talk to boats and ground stations as I go about my chores.

The new struts look chunky, but she has study sea-legs now. The usual TFS paint job will ensue shortly.
Our Grandson, Russell named this airplane "Hummazoo" for the pleasing sound she makes cruising steady above the Big Blue.
She fairly begs for a scale sharkmouth, don't you agree?

It occurred to me that few people buy aircraft this size and fewer still gripe, um Give Feedback.
He knows the fix to make. If he makes it, I assured him I wasn't interested in buying a second Caravan amphibian model.
A smart guy that was interested in keeping up good customer relations might just send the improved model to the model maker and ask his opinion on the upgrade. This guy is a stone. It's $13.00 retail plus shipping. Cost is probably $3.50 or less.

Mine is fixed well enough to paint and play with. I even printed tiny shark mouths for it.

Big Cutter kits are selling again, and I'm running out of 1/350 HH-52A Seaguard Helicopters.

Since I have more time than $$ these days, and Shapeways still doesn't offer these scale egg-beaters, I supported them and prepared to make molds. The winders are marked out with a sharpie marker and I put little drops of Tamiya X-22 in them. Hopefully this softens the horrible layering in the winders at very least. This busy mold contains 1/350 USCG Seaguard and HOS4-2 Chickasaw with hoists and optional floats for the Chickasaw. Yes, the decals include USAF markings for the Chickasaw too!
These along with the HH-3F Pelican kit could form the 1/350 USCG Helicopter set for tlarmodels.com in the not too distant future.

A much less busy mold will produce main and tail rotors for both new Helo's.
Thanks for looking in again!

The 1/350 Chickasaw and Seaguard mold worked swell. Support removal is not very complex. The rotor mold includes 2 new 2-bladed tail rotors for both Sikorsky whirly-birds. As casting of more Big Cutter Kits progress, I will not run short of 1/350 scale rescue helicopters ever again!
That, and no 1/350 Reliance class WMEC customer will look at the HH-52A instructions and go "Make what out of sheet plastic?" ever again!
Thanks for following along!

Initial 1/350 Helicopter decal proof. The USAF rescue stripes and "Hop A Long" are too big. The USCG "racing stripe" for the Pelican is too short and the USCG for the belly is too little. Hop A Long was the first US Air Force Helicopter to fly across the Atlantic ocean. I don't usually do USAF, but crossing the pond in a mix-master is cool! More "stare and compare" and sizing work to do.

The Sikorsky S-61R or HH-3 Helicopter served our forces in 2 guises. The USAF HH-3E Jolly Green Giant combat rescue helicopter and later on, the US Coast Guard HH-3F Pelican long range SAR helicopter. My USCG version retains her long range external fuel tanks. An absolutely accurate Pelican can be made by removing the external tanks.
By design, the S-61R uses the same main & tail rotor as the speedy, well known US Navy Sikorsky S-61/SH-3 Seaking helicopter. Lucky for me, Five Star makes beautiful P/E parts for these assemblies!

Now, a guy can clip off the main rotor blades at the hub and install them in the existing Pelican main rotor hub and be a happy helicopter guy.
OR!
Five Star Models instructions can be followed to assemble a convincing 1/350 scale S-61R main rotor.

I used a .040 copper wire main shaft and clipped off the rotor head cap and drilled out the center of the transmission to make a good fit.
Save the rotor head cap.

Install the included strut for the tailplane, rescue hoist and nose gear before you go too much further! It is a good idea to finish the paint job apply your decals before installing the main & tail rotors. Decals include markings for 6 markings documented USCG HH-3F helicopters. This one is 1497 from Air Station San Diego. She's the one that rescued Maverick and recovered Goose' body in the original TOPGUN movie.
The Seaking main p/e main gear is provocative, but for our 1/350 purposes, we will use the existing LPP cast kit mains.

Sanding off the nose radar, adding a aerial refueling boom and Jolly Green paint will yield an convincing 1/350 HH-3E Jolly Green Giant.
"Rhino. Where are the decal markings for the Jolly Green?"
During the Vietnam war, USAF Rescue helicopters most often operated without markings. Air Force rescue crews paid little attention to politics or borders. The unmarked helicopters offered an amount of public plausible deniability, should they be shot down on the wrong side of a line on a map.

No decals were required, see?!

Thanks for looking in!
