Revell 1/720 DKM Graf Zeppelin 1946 Revisited

The third shade for GZ's camo will be light gray. Undersides of the gun tub/sponsons will remain white, to offset the shadows of overhanging structures. I haven't decided what to do with the horizontal surfaces or island yet. I will try to think up something. :bm:

Finding a spot to sight the radar antenna isn't too hard to figger out. I fear the sponsons are just a shade to narrow to mount the deadly 128mm cannons. :blink
It was worth a shot.
 
Hmm this thread started 6 years ago on a build that started 16 years ago. I think we need to do a shelf queen build and come up with an award for the oldest build that gets finished.
I can garantee that I have at least 2 builds that go back to the 80's.

This GZ is modified from the original vessel and the crude old Revell tooling a little bit. Forward barbettes are removed. No clunky basket trolleys for launching aircraft. A cooler crane. A lot more AA guns. Improved radar. Stuff like that.

Well. That's disruptive, all right! I color-wheeled the blue and green. The opposing color of choice was orange. Not bloody likely in the 1946 North Atlantic! :bat Red-brown might have been cool as well.

The very real possibility of attack by heavy bombers leads us to yet another iteration of "Ocean Ambush".
You German armor builders will understand what all the pesky Tamiya tape triangles are for.
Tommy Bombcat has paid a 1/700 scale visit.
One more color to add to the horizontal surfaces. I have to figger out the superstructure paint scheme after this. :wow:

I'm waiting for a Tom's Modelworks order to arrive. Under the aft end of the flightdeck, there was a bunch of p/e framework. I mangled it handling the ship. I've learned quite a lot about installing photo-etch since I started this model. I thought she deserved better than "Gosh, I hope no one looks under there."

A conversation should be had about GZ's armament.

Given the dearth of historically accurate Deutcheskreigsmarine flags, and no pennant for GZ, a couple of hours produces this 1/700-720-350 scale decal sheet.

Maybe these will be more pleasing. If I were building a Gato/Balao/Tench class WWII Pacific war US Navy submarine model, I might want the battle flag for my submarine hero's boat. Mush Morton, Dick O'Kane, Howard Gilmore to name a few.
In Another World Graphics offers these for sale in 1/72, 1/144, 1/350 and 1/700 scales. 48-star period correct US Flags and the US Yacht ensign are also included. In fact, most of these battle flags were one-sided, as they were made on patrol, in combat by the crews.
Mine have 2 sides with the images and script reversed.

The 1/72 scale decal sheet should be much easier to view, even for Ski!

I include these in all the US Navy Pacific war submarine kits I sell, for free. Honestly, a Trumperter 1/144 1941 Gato is the only one I have listed so far. Like Ragu. It's in there!
