Soviet Guerrilla WWII - Evolution Miniatures 1/35

Hi All

Trying to get back into figure painting, it's been a long time. I received this Russian guy by accident, but the
shopkeeper said go ahead and keep it, so I thought it would be a good piece to mess around with. This is the first
time I have really tried to paint anything with acrylics, and so far, the verdict is still out...

Here he is with a quick primer coat of Mr. Surfacer 1000.

And here he is with the colors blocked in with a combination of Vallejo and Reaper Miniatures acrylics...

My opinions, and they are just my opinions...

Vallejo:
Don't like them. They are thick, rubbery, dry too fast and you end up pushing and pulling the paint around, not
pleasant at all. I really don't get what the big deal is, everyone seems to love them, but then again, I'm weird.
(Or my paints are really old)

Reaper Miniatures:
Awesome!!! I love them. They cover well, don't dry too fast, have lots of colors, (kinda feel like enamels),
in fact I am going to order more of them as soon as I am done with this post.

And in case you are wondering, yes, I am mixing a bit of Liquitex Flow-Aid and Slow-Dri into the paints, just
seems to work so much better with the Reaper paints.

Next step...the oils...I'm scared...

Off to a great start Tom !!!! (y) (y) (y)

I love Vallejo`s although I must admit Ive never tried Reapers offerings :hmmm

Hey thanks Andy...I sure hope I like them...I just ordered a whole crap load of them. :woohoo:

Anyone got any idea what that thing is under his coat on the right side? Could be a map case, but seems to have some
kind of metal ring thingy at the top.

It's a pistol holster. I don't have a clear view but I'd say for either a 7.62mm Tula-Tokarev TT-30 or TT-33 semi-automatic. The holster should be finished in a brown leather. The metal ring thingy looks like a component of a pistol cleaning kit.

Hi Rudi
Thanks, that makes a lot of sense...probably why I didn't think of it.

Been working on this guys face, first pic shows his eyes added with Humbrol over the acrylic base. I like to do this so I
can remove what doesn't need to be there with a brush dampened with mineral spirits.

And after painting, repainting, unpainting, repainting some more...I'm gonna call his face done, even though I'm not totally
happy with it (are we ever?)...All painting done here with oils.

It is a drum magazine holder for the PPSH 41, the colour should be a little more to the green side.

They issued them with either a leather buckle, a string and toggle setup or a leather button.

I also like the way the model uses a captured German winter jacket, very nice touch. (y)

Hey thanks guys!

And thank you David, I was actually inquiring about the thing on his "other" right side, and I agree, it will get a more
greenish tinge to it.

So that is in fact a pilfered german jacket?... Am I on the right track with a sort of mouse grey exterior?

I really appreciate your input.

Thanks again, Tom

Opps, wrong side!!!

Yep its a German jacket and the mouse grey is spot on. (y)

Well, I'm gonna call this guy finished...'cause I'm tired of messing with him.
He should have a PPSH under his right arm, but the kit part was badly cast, so whatev...he was practice anyways.

I tried alot of new things with him, some worked, some didn't, but I learned alot. I ended up using the 502 Abt oil paints
for most of him, I really like them alot.

And here is the top of his hat. Not sure if it's accurate, but a google search showed blue with white stripes was a
common color comdo.

Thanks for looking, comments most welcome,
