Interesting Question from Another Forums

Duke Maddog

Well-known member
One of the Forums I'm a member of will go dark in September of next year when the domain name comes up for renewal. Sadly, this is because most members who used to make it fun; left for Facebook and/or other modeling Forums. This Forums had been around for ten great years. It was the first modeling Forums that truly made me feel welcome and accepted, and in which I had the most fun.

One of the remaining members posted an interesting open question that I'd like to post here.

"In the time that you've been a member of this Forums, how many models of all genres have you completed?"

The answers over there were very interesting to say the least. I haven't been a member here for long enough to have a large count, but many of you have been around far longer. It would be interesting to see your counts. Mind you, this question is NOT intended to embarrass anyone or call someone out for over-production or under-production. The question is solely intended to get all the members thinking about all of the great models we as a group have produced in the time you've been here.

Have some fun with it and I look forward to seeing some of your answers.

Well, I got post number one here, think Saul has post #2. I have no idea how many build I've completed, haven't kept count. I could count the ones on my self but that's not all of them, I've chunked a number of them, gave a couple away.

Who's going away? The Lem?

Who's going away? The Lem?

Yeah, I just jumped on and the domain runs out in September.

It's sad, it's a great group, just too small to sustain over time. The early days had a wild amount of activity, I recall Secret Santas with so many members all opening at the same time, it went on for hours live.

Every group has lulls in activity and a loss of one or two members hits a small group hard.

I know we have a gallery, but we could start a "Modelers Alliance Heritage" forum where members would be encouraged to post a thread chronicling the builds they have completed on this site. It would be something each member could update and we would have a running record of the sites accomplishments. No comments would be allowed as this for the historical record. It would also serve as a memorial for past members. Each thread would begin with a picture of the member followed by historical data like when they joined, model speciality, country of origin, and current rank. Then all the member would need to do is add pictures to that post via the edit process as new models are completed. Each model would be allowed a maximum of two images. This forum would open to the public for viewing. This would be serious forum so no childish BS would be tolerated. Each member would be responsible for maintaining his or her thread to make sure it is up-to-date.

Yes, it is the LEM going away, and in some ways, I blame you guys who are here and used to be on there for it's closing down., If you had even posted half as much there as you have here, I think we'd still be able to keep it going. So in a way, it's all your faults. Okay, rant off, I still love all you guys and I'm glad to be able to keep in touch with you here.

Terry, I love the idea of a Heritage Forums for each member. I do hope it can be instituted. I would certainly have a load of pics to post up. Hopefully, we can also add a Heritage Thread for those who've passed away like Tom Wes, so everyone can see his work.

That's bit harsh there Mark.

The LEM was an amazing place for years, but it's origin was a perfect storm, sort of like catching lightning in a bottle. There was a large group of guys who had a long history together on FSM. Then FSM had it's upheaval (I can't even remember what it was) and those who didn't want to go to the hardcore sites like Armorama or MissingLynx jumped on Sherm's new place.

It was a virtual water cooler, where you could meet every morning to check in. Great people, a lotta fun, but that's hard to maintain over time. Members move on/get out of the hobby/new job/etc. and then all the feelings of 'it's not like it used be' sink in. Over the years, whenever I'd drop by, very few of the old gang was there, so I wouldn't stick around too long. It felt like going to a reunion from a different year class.

Nobody's fault, the best parties are great because they end before people get bored. You can't force fun.

Ahh yeah, the great Fiasco on FSM... Yes, alot of the guys were banned after that & regrouped when the LEM came about. I was on there for awhile then had a computer crash, upgrade & lost alot of my bookmarks & had health issues so, wasn't on the forums much & when I got back to the LEM,it was real quiet for the most part. & then Facebook came about which took alot of modelers from the forums. Sure, I do facebook but, prefer traditional forums myself.

The LEM is not the first and won't be the last to go the way of the DODO bird.
Planet Armor was like Missing Lynx without the attitude and a super great site but has dwindled down to nothingness now days. :(

I like the Ideal of the Heritage thread ... I've not been on many Forums ... I only know the people from the other Forum which folded up ... and I lost most all my posts & modeling threads ... let me add that at least LEM is giving a long notice which I like ... the last one was going to be two weeks ... then turn into 2 Hours ... then was shut down early ... So I know people from that one & the great modelers Here ... which I respect greatly and I've learned a lot from Ya'll ... Now my thread would only have two models so far ... but I have a bunch in the works ... but since I've made a commitment to get more bench time less TV ... (I'll DVR all my shows)... Just My Wife is the greatest and I like to spend time with Her and My Internet Family at MA ... the only other Forum I'm on is DakkaDakka ... But I haven't been there much lately ... Busy Times Now Days hard to find Bench time ... (y)
