Going Old School.

One of my sons is into Iron Maiden and off-handedly asked me if I've heard of them.

He was mildly surprised to hear that I hung out with the Bass player and singer in the Village one afternoon when I was just about his age, so yeah, I've heard of them.

So I exposed him to all of Maiden's older stuff from the early 80's and explained some of the old days and ways, including painting dungaree jackets.

He talked me into doing one for him, so a few evenings at the bench and...Eddie in his Spit. I can hear Churchill's 'We will fight...'

That is very very cool. Was he impressed? I've had similar experiences with some older groups and their rediscovery.

He went to my neighbor to show it off and came back with every CD and film they put out so we'll be checking out Flight 666 soon.

Maiden seems to be one of those bands that attracts a wider than genre fan base. I wouldn't think kids today would be into them, but my son gets compliments from a host of unexpected people at his school, including faculty and staff.

After all, I learned all the Coleridge and Tennison I know from them, just like the old Warner Bros. cartoons taught me classical music.

He likes the jacket, but he won't let on if he thinks the painting is up to par, that'd be giving away too much credit to Dad.

I probably did about 20 Zep 4s (the hermit on the mountain) with the usual Stones, Doors and Sabbath sprinkled in.

I remember my first, I wanted a simple AC/DC on a black background. So I go to Pearl Paint and pickup four tubes of color and give it a shot. I couldn't understand why the black was still wet after 3 weeks. I wish someone told me not to use oils (remember the pre-internet days?). :S

I wonder if painted jackets went out with vinyl? Hard to appreciate album art on a CD.

You don't have to be over 50 to appreciate Motown and the Rat Pack, though maybe you do to swig Martinis like Dino.

Martin was his best as Matt Helm. Just sayin'.

As far as Elvis, I prefer the guys he stole from, same as the Stones and Zeppelin, making money off of poor old blues masters who never saw a dime.

By the way, Tony Bennett will be doing a show with Lady Gaga this week on PBS, talk about skippin' a record. Love all his duets with younger singers, but this'll be weird.

Pearl Paint and the walk up (yes, they have an elevator but it was sooooo sloooooow!). I knew not to use oils but I had a bit to learn as acrylics tended to crack. My own jacket was like the portfolio... Rolling Stones, Van Halen, AC/DC, Police, Cars, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Dio, Journey, Dire Straits, BOC, Twisted Sister, and many more had tiny icons on my back.
