HEAR NO EVIL, SAY NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL

Cute little picture isn’t it. We have all seen something like this either using monkeys, frogs, or whatever. This one however fits us the best. The smiley face; we all like to use the smiley face in our posts right. Upon reflection this cute little picture illustrates a rather disturbing trend in our society toward apathy that is even penetrating our hobby. The little cartoon is an illustration of thought progression. Notice how each smiley is indeed smiling. This is important! Let’s go through them shall we and apply them to ourselves. The first little guy is happy and feels really good about himself, but has shut out any other thoughts that might upset his little world. Ignorance is bliss. The second is really happy with himself because he is not saying anything that might offend someone. Besides if they want to put the drive sprocket where the idler should be that’s ok. It’s not my place to upset someone’s little world. The last little guy is probably the most dangerous because he has shut out the truth and refused to speak the truth so much that he happily doesn’t know the difference anymore.

On Modelers Alliance we have gone out of our way to stamp out trollish behavior, but in our campaign against negativity have we gone too far? This past weekend I found myself unable to tell a fellow member, when asked, what he needed to do better for fear of offending him. Things like maybe you should do some panel shading, or maybe some dry brushing. Sorry Joe! Is it offensive to try and help someone by pointing out something they could do better? Are we so wrapped up in our cocoons of self-superiority that we are offended when someone is just trying to help? I say instead of posting a smiley let’s do a little more talking. If we see something we like say so and likewise if we have suggestions say so. Just remember, as I was reminded the other day, “He means well”
Thoughts?

:) couldn't help it, it's something to think about, and it depends on what level the modeller is i think, let's say i'm a beginner and get the suggestion i should have done some more colour modulation or pinwash on the panels (i haven't done any modulation yet, and not sure i will start with it either) when i'm just happy finnishing a build, it would take me down a little.

I know i would like more comments and tips in the building stage, not when it's finnished (not much to do then about it :facepalm ) also questions on how something is done, i gladly show a SBS if asked for.

As long as it's not said to hurt, then i think most people here can take some critique or?

I say if i like something, but not neccesary if i don't like something, if the person building it is happy with it, then it's a good build.

Not sure this is answer to your question Terry, just my idea of how to treat my fellow modellers :)

And the smilies is a good way to let someone know that people are there looking and liking :popcorn

I'm just saying we shouldn't be afraid to say something and we shouldn't be offended when someone does. If someone is being nasty wewill take of them. Most comments about how to do this or that is really just food for thought not a directive to do the build over.

Thanks for the comment.

I know of one modeler that feels that MA is just too nice when it comes to just this point. I know I would like some extra eyes on my models sometimes. Just getting a pat on the back sometimes makes it feel not worthwhile even posting up. I do apreciate the PM's I get when you guys see something, but why not just post it on my build and then it might help others also?

Terry. I am all for constructive criticism when it comes to building. Really it is the only way to learn new techniques. Also I've noticed I can be so involved in a build that I might overlook something that somebody will notice immediately. Where I have an issue is when people will say something along the lines of "Why did you build that kit? Don't you know all the errors in it?" But really I've never seen that happen here at all. I think at the end of the day we are all grown adults and can handle comments good or bad. Especially if it will help us become better modelers. Just my two cents.

I agree let's talk about things. Modeling is a process weather it is during a single build or over several builds.

Like I said if someone is getting nasty or trollish they will be dealt with, but if we don't help each other why are we here.

I'm open to any and all tips and tricks, I like criticism and I like offering help and sharing my personal experiences. Especially with photos! LOL

I treat others how I like to be treated, fair, honest and with humor.

Attaboy Terry! :rotf

If I have not made myself clear. I want the feed back! I know I suck at this so you can't hurt my feelings.

I try to leave constructive criticism but most times all I can say is (y) :popcorn cause it's all looking good.

While we're on the subject. The one that gets me is when someone offers advice to others in Private Message...you know who you are... :smack. :Hiay I understand, to a point, why but still. Others could benefit from what's said in private.

Trolls...what trolls? :rotf :mpup

not sure what someone can say to you about building! :drinks

yeah, I think that's the primary thing you got to take into consideration. What was the intent of the comment. I try, very hard, to read what someone says and if it comes across badly, give them the benefit of the doubt. So much is lost in translation between the mind and the keyboard sometimes.

On 2 difrent occasions have I gotten my Spitfires wheels turned around. No one mentioned it. Now I dont know about others but I want to know when I make such a bad mistake I Got quite a few comments on both and no one mentioned it. Me and a mate had a good laugh about it (Both times) and I repaired it.

I learned a lot out of it.
1. Make sure you get your parts sorted right and dont get em mixed up
2. Never build a bloody Spitfire again
3. Unless I make 110% sure I get the wheels right.

I would have poked fun at you but I wouldn't have even noticed since I am terrible at noticing stuff like that :rotf
