Lathe schmathe. I can stick styrene in a Dremel and shape it, what I can't do is cut a straight line or a hundred pieces all the same size. :woohoo:

Darn James , you're going to need a machinist as well to make that.

It would be easier to just send Chris a vacuum former machine to Chris instead :D Unless I can figure out how to relieve my dentist from his while he's busy :rotf

Cheers, Christian B)

A couple notes on that lathe. I have a small one that I bought close to twenty years ago. While I have used it extensively in my model railroading hobby, I have only used it rarely in plastic modeling. I could not have justified the cost for plastic modeling alone. I suppose if I built a lot of armor models I might have used it more. In watching the first video I cringed every time he got the tool close to chuck. I hope he had a stop set to keep him from hitting it. It's real easy to grab the crank handle and turn it the wrong way and hitting the chuck will usually break the tool often sending the broken part flying away like a projectile. Eye protection recommended. I also think that leaving the lathe running while changing parts is a bad habit to get into. While his chuck appeared to be rather smooth, many have sharp protruding parts that if you run your hand into them you will regret it. Most of my uses in plastic modeling has been to center holes in things like poorly molded wheels and similar uses on propellers. I did make some spinner extensions for my Condor on the lathe.

Probably wouldn't hurt to take a class on metal working, don't think of the local tech schools still offer them. Cutting dead center is my biggest problem and probably what I would use a lathe for most of the time. I know some do it with a dremel but the dremels I have has just too much play in the motor, you can see the tip of the bit just all over the place.

Now if they have some sort of "tail stock" that I could hook up to a drill press, that might be something doable.

I hear ya Bob! The newer Dremels are not what they used to be.

Though some of the accessories are somewhat improved. I found that the chuck set you have for it makes a big difference. Recently I bought a new chuck set for my 25 year old Dremel and the new chucks work VERY nicely. I wish they would re-release some of the older style tools as Dremel Classic or something. I would buy another. The new stuff just looks cheap and crappy to me.

A number of years ago I found a really ancient Dremel with a solid metal drill press on the bay for fairly cheap. It works well though some doof spliced the power cord to have a 2 prong cord on the end.

I agree regarding Dremel. I miss the days where it was rock solid with a on/off switch on the end. I still use them, but they do feel cheap. Their drill press is an abomination, more like an adjustable tool caddy. There has to be a good 1/16 lateral movement once the drill hits the surface. It has it's uses, but a drill press is not one of them.

The most use I get out of Dremel these days is a flex shaft with burring and sanding bits via a footswitch.

Nice, although I have done that without having seen this video. Actually, I had done it with the previous chopper variant.

:good:

No lathe? :rotf

Nice job on that Dr. B. Really like that square he used to find center.

Just bought a center finder from UMM that should do well. http://umm-usa.com/onlinestore/product_info.php?products_id=6607
