The latest Something I 've been doing.........5 x WW1 Armoured cars - progress 12th March 2026 - Romfell WEATHERING

Some more progress on the RR Armoured Car..................
The final touches on the weathering 'topside is continuing and I have started work on the wheels.
THE WHEELS! :ph:
Well, the wheels are not to my liking at all. I know some people have probably used them but I think they look a bit crappy and are not worth the effort it takes to get them right. I built one and that was enough - I will keep the rest of the tyres to use as spares.

I did some research and found that the RR Ar car could interchange/ replace wheels with the Lanchester, as they both ran tyres and rims from the same company. I decided to use the wheels from my CSM Lanchester kit on the customer RR and get a new set of CSM 3D Printed Lanchester ones for myself. I also got some Plus model RR Ar car wheels for my kit for a future WW1 desert version. This also allowed me to use the kit tyres
as spares which the desert vehicles carried a lot of.

Looking at more photos on the net, I realised that the RR combat photos show that the side lights in the kit have been taken -off in 9/10 shots. Great! Mine broke off at the start of the build so that suited me just fine. :)

I also scratched-up the spare wheel holder bars on the side (copying the CSM Lanchester ones) as Meng doesn't give you anything as an option if you don't attach a spare.

The bar and plate without an end is on the right side will be having a spare attached.
Finished model with base up soon.

Happy little accident knocking the light off. Probably what happened to the real vehicles also.
Wheels looking good, glad you upgraded. :soldier

Accidents are always good.
I accidently spilt my track wash on the front right side panel and thought it was a redo. Wiped as much as I could away, then went back over it with dry pigments while it was still damp and 'PRETSO', it looks better than before the spill (to me anyway).
Glad you like the wheels , the CSM kit wheels are very nice and have tyre valves that you attach seperately from the rims. I think they look very sharp for plastic injection spokes.

Thats what I did with my RR also. Ordered a set from CSM to replace the ones I used. Did a build review back in 2019. Loving the builds Ian.

More progress...............
weathering the RR, I said it was going to beat it up a bit and I wasn't kidding. Here are some stages of weathering etc.
nearly done without wheels and some of the gear......

Wheels on and some gear added.......I haven't done the weathering on the wheels yet as I will wait until the vehicle is on the base so I can blend the colors properly. The tyres and coat etc need some additional weathering as do some of the watermarks. Also front lights and mounts still need to be added - almost forgot about those

The base is still drying and waiting for paint and the vehicle to blend in.

Dirty dirty dirty!

RR Ar Car done with the base, but the figure is still in progress with the others..........like I always say, I think the model looks better in 'real life' rather than through the lens of my phone camera, which never catches the colors correctly and destroys the subtle variations that you get with your own eyes. :(

Ha ha yes the average phone camera is so bad they have to install a very sophisticated program to fix the image before you even see it. But look at the lens with its 10x magnification ? Truth is its not 10x magnifying anything, its selecting a bit of the image and digitally enhancing it to compensate for the poor quality/resolution of the original picture.

A bit of progress on the Romfell - the last one in this batch.
We were last here a few weeks back before I strated painting the Rolls etc...........
Austro-Hungarian AC (basically the car Count Dracular would have driven if he was in WW1)

*so now I have progress to the finish line with only the figure left to do and a couple of small touches.

The brass light looks great but once the top went onyou can only see it from the front through the small window.
This was easily the hardest one of the batch of 5 with the two tone green being a real joy to mask- off :ph:. I also found out the hard way that I should have attached the roof bonet and grill before the paint stage as they required more work to be done because the fit was a little poor. This meant the paint etc was damaged fixing it and needed more repainting. I thought that it would be easier to do the serate colors before attaching.
Wrong

So once that stage was sorted I was ready to do the decals, then the weathing and attach the model to the base.

The weatherin on this was always going to be fun but I also had to be careful as I only wanted a light to medium effect. This model is usually done with very little weathering as it is nearly always refenced on the photos before it saw any action - 'bugger that, not my cup of tea chaps'.
It saw action to the point wher it had to get the original chassis replaced with a small truck chassis that the upper body /cab could still fit on. At that point the markings had been taken off to make it more 'low key', so I needed to back date to the earlier status.
The kit also gives you inner details but I only wanted to show the rear chain drive on one side (which they have you cover by default), so I made it look as though the panel had been removed for some maintenance. I drilled out the boltheads on the removed panel and added some washes and bolts to the oily mess on the cobble stones but will need tohigh light them betted as they are nearlt invisiblein the photos.
I thought the effect of dark road dust on the roof and leaking oil from the turret race wouldgive it a bit of charcter up highand the mud down low.
The turret looks a little crooked because I didn't push it down properly before I took the photos.
