Surgicon 28 6 April, 2024 Late Fools/ 75 Years of NATO

The effervescent, sweet-smelling IPMS Plastic Surgeons will offer, for your model fun-seeking, our 28th Surgicon Model contest. (We missed a couple of shows due to Wuhan Flu.) Those "other" Plastic Surgeons will also be on hand. I notice other IPMS clubs offer fillable and printable forms on their websites.

Well, we don't! Or do we? Scroll down to the bottom! MUHHU-HAHA-haha HA!
Print them ahead of time? YES!
Fill them out on-line. Not so far!
Get out your ink-sticks, Gentlemen!

The Contest Theme is "75 Years of NATO". A broad theme indeed!

It should be noted that 2024 is the 30th anniversary of the IPMS Plastic Surgeons establishment. How did this escape our Contest Chairman's attention? Who knows? There is a guy in our Merry Band of Model Miscreants that remembers almost everything, but he rarely stays long enough at a club meeting to add his input to the contest. His Wife goes to work at 0-Dark:30 Friday morning.
No one asked this person for his input.

The contest will be held in the Bondurant American Legion hall. It's cozy! Nobody had any trouble staying warm inside the venue last year, to be sure.
Fine dining can be had in a couple of spots in Bondurant, and in as many as you like in nearby Altoona Iowa. Jethro's BBQ is a favorite!
Come one, Come all to the charming Hamlet on Highway 330, weather permitting!

Entry forms are filled out and models are packed and ready for travel. Saturday's weather look to be much milder than last years show.
Once again, dear friends, into the breach!

Not everyone lives close enough to come over and play with the "Cool Kids".
Since many of our M/A members cannot attend in person, I offer my humble impressions and overview, shall I?
Boat-tail 712 departs Starbase 0711 this A.M. We try to leave earlier, but my Sweetie and I find our mornings move more slowly as we age.
Arrived American Legion Post 396 0820.

Registration crew is operating as expected. I was entrant #2. Stalwart Plastic Surgeons treasurer, George Stevens slips the bounds of his recent illness to fill his role at the registration table! It was a pleasure to have George in our midst once again.

Just after this picture was taken, an old, disheveled (drunk) Post 396 member wandered up and accused us of breaking Federal Law by moving tables out of the closet where the small arms locker is and began chewing our Aimee Lotz out about how much of the post we had rented and violating our rental contract. We'll call him "Al" for our purposes here. "Rude, ignorant, stinky, village idiot" is too long.

He walked past 10 men and picked on the smallest woman he could find.
Just about the time our hackles rose, right before we tossed this old feather merchant Bully SOB where he truly belongs, The USS Forrestal CPO's daughter let this bully have his due. He sorely underestimated the opponent he chose.

Aimee pointed out, emphatically and in short order that he didn't have a copy of the contract, that we had, in fact, rented the entire post, including the galley and that securing the small arms is the responsibility of the Post and not the customer! :vmad:

I am a member of American Legion Post 572 PEKOMY. No guest or civilian in MY post would EVER be treated with such disregard and complete rudeness. As for this Post's small arms; Their M1 Garand rifles are filthy and in need of lubrication. After some TLC and removal of that awful white stain on the stock, they operate as good as new.
"Al" meandered off, chagrined. Listing and trailing smoke from his hindquarters.
Webmistress Aimee Lotz, for the WIN!:Drinks:

In any case, back to the fun of our contest.

I don't know what Ross Petra said to Kevin Nelson, but Kevin surely seemed to be enjoying himself! It was good to see Kevin in such good spirits! He had a pretty serious surgery (not plastic) not long ago and is mending steadily!

I led the Armor judging team this year. I insisted on picking my team and Head Judge "Sheriff" Nate Stevens wisely allowed me to do so.
Mike Rasmussen, Carlton Burger, joined by Colton Routh Judged 6 of 7 categories of Armor.
"Drive by shooting" first. What model catches your eye? Is it interesting/ believable?
Look closely at construction; tracks, alignment, fit, running gear touching the ground and each other. Pieces broken off?
Gaps, seams?
Paint job, fingerprints, decals?
Then weathering as a final deciding factor. Did the vehicle have a crash in a flour factory and then get caught in rust-rain? Are the tracks and running gear packed solid with scale mud/dirt?

Thomas the Thermonuclear Bomb tickled me! It makes you wonder where Reginald the B-36 Peacemaker may be, don't it? The landscape is a photo of North Korea. Thomas is a one-part 3D print. Very clever indeed!

These appreciative poker chips showed up at some point today. I like this method of showing model appreciation! A team is being assembled to reveal the identity of this mystery model appreciator, and perhaps organize a Sno-Cat poker game. 7-Toed Pete anyone? It's kinda like poker!

Visiting model makers sometimes ask Sheriff Nate if the club president will announce the awards.
"We have a Guy for that". Guess who?
Those of you that have heard me announce Surgicon awards, know why Zoe and Trennis did the deliveries. I can talk faster than even children can run!

In Dane's absence, I enlisted the help of 3 other experienced modelers to choose the first recipient of the Don Barry award. Ron's Bunnies were in the running, but I would NO WAY choose my own model for the Don award. We chose Weston Wedeward's 1/35 Panzer III ausf. N as the best iteration of what Don may have most appreciated. Weston peeked inside the giant 100 oz. themo-mug and found the warm diet Mountain Dew and 5 airline bottles of Black Velvet inside. He looked PLEASED! Teresa and I don't forget many Don details.
The Junior Chuck Eagle Bobble-head award went to Jun Yeong Smith for his Italeri 1/72 Swiss F-5E Tiger II.

Teresa's raffle wins! We decided to curtail her Raffle ops a bit "So that others may win".

I bought 2 models. The Monogram Infantry I couldn't pass up. The new Airfix 1/72 Me-410 was a square deal at $30.00 no freight. Thanks Winston!

I did really well at Surgicon 28. I am honored by the appreciation of my peers. A few modelers took a close look at the crew of the 1/350 Three Mile Limit and were impressed!

It's time for sleepin'.
Thanks for looking in!

"Al" meandered off, chagrined. Listing and trailing smoke from his hindquarters.
Nice job!

Can we get a Maj Kong printed for "Thomas the Thermonuclear Bomb "

Congrats on the wins everyone. Thanks for the report Chris.

Congrats on the wins everyone. Thanks for the report Chris.
Oddly enough, you are not the first person to think of ol' Major Kong!
As 3d printing becomes more prevalent, I think IPMS judges will need to more often consider the difficulty and media of the build.
Steve Speicer also made a 3D printed 1/35 tractor model that was 40 pieces. This seems more like a "Kit" to me. The resolution/texture of such things varies widely. His Glencoe 1/40 Grumman Duck had 3d printed crewmen. They were very realistic.

My spank-brand-new Atlantic Models 1/700 HMS Bluebell came with 3d printed bits. They look excellent. I eye them with distrust nevertheless.

Quotable quotes:
"1/72 Japanese Army Tankette with chemical trailer. What kind of chemicals?"
"Japanese Chemicals."

"For safety's sake, go outside in pairs. Thin guys, take a fat guy with you to hang on to. We don't want this wind to carry you off to Ankeny."

"Jose' Wake up! You won first prize!"

"See how I let Steve Schafer sit all the way down, before I announced his next award?"

"I'll be right back. Then you can say 'Thank you' to me again." (Delivering medicinal Black Velvet after a vulgar idiot went on his stupid way)

"Aquarius AT Fra Moro?" "No, Aquarius AT Framoro. one word, see?" "Aquarius AT Framoro-dot-com?" Larry Lahs first prize.

"JGDSF? Japanese Ground Defense Self Force? That don't sound right. Look, I just read what you guys try to write."

"Now I remember why they called me 'Zach Sherman." (Zoe Shireman)

"It's Barrett's Privateers, not Barrette's Privateers, Jeffrey. Then again..............."

The IPMS Plastic Surgeons Facehole page will have lots more pictures than my meager efforts.

In keeping with the former motif of Plastic Surgeons drinking vessels, Bill Wedeward made our regular awards generous enough to make a fine coaster, rather than drawer fillings.

(Shameless plug) Bill makes all kinds of nifty things in his Wisconasin shop.
