Something Different at Horse Guards

Today, 11 July, the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) took over duty as King's Life Guard from the Household Cavalary. They will be mounting the guard in the Mounted Duty Boxes at Whitehall for the next 10 days.

In 2000 the LdSH(RC) are served as Queen's Life Guard, their cenntenial year. They are now celebrating thier 125th year of service, standing up in February 1900. Their first active duty was during the Second Boer War. On their return from South Africa in 1901 they received the King's Colours. They went on to serve in WW1, WW2, Korea and Afghanistan. They were also deployed on several UN and NATO missions.

Good luck in this weather, its been 35c in London the last few weeks.
I remember going up to see my brother on guard duty with the Blues and Royals. Although he was a tank commander he had to learn to ride a horse as they all do :) All the cavalry regiments are actually mechanised so Tank or armoured recognisance regiments.
