Sleeping GI in Vietnam

JamesOLeary

Master at Arms
When Royal Models released this figure, I saw some good potential in it. It is a nice kit, but the frame of the chair is in white metal and does not fit up to the resin seat part of the chair, so I decided that I would make my own chair or have him laying back on something else.

First I wanted to place the figure in some jungle fatigues, so I sculpted in the cargo pockets, lengthened the shirt a bit, added the jacket pockets and carved better details into the sides of the jungle boots. I then took an air mattress from Bravo 6's "Rubber Lady" figure kit, ran it under hot water and bent it to shape to accommodate the pose of the figure. I then made my own chair out of styrene.

Since I am not sure I will use the chair or have him resting on other objects, I felt the left arm looked odd and wanted to replace it. I sculpted in a new left arm that looks more natural and will allow me to place the figure in a setting without an arm rest if that is the direction I decide to go. Overall, I think the figure is turning out fairly well.

It has been a while since I have worked on this or any model as my wife has been having some major health issues. If I am lucky, I can squeeze in a bit of modeling in 15-20 minute increments. After looking at this guy and having him among other figures for a diorama I am in the process of building, I decided that his head was too small in comparison with the other figures he will be positioned near, so I changed out his head with a Hornet head, added some hair with Magic Sculpt, and made a pillow for him. I also made a new chair out of styrene strips.

I like how he looks now.

Thanks for looking.

Is there a ping-pong table sized Vietnam diorama to pose all these awesome figures on? I would mention again, how much I enjoy watching the process of your figure building!

Thanks. I wish I had the kind of room to make a diorama that size at home. For this particular figure, he will be finding a home in the haircut diorama that I posted in a new thread. Now I just need to come up with a catchy title. :)

Fantastic! He sure does look much better with the new head!
The kit head was OK, but it was too small. With the new head I was able to make the figure become part of the story line of the diorama that he will be in. I am glad that you like him better with the new head, too.
