Mk7 C mid war - Revell 05015 and 05163 Platinum Edition cross kit build.
1/72 '42-'43 Mk7C U- 664 DIORAMA Waterlined Model.
U-664 was a Mk7C with the following early mid war features
This build will be a diorama and will have the sub sinking at the rear with the crew 'bailing overboard' after being hit by an Avenger.
I have a series of photos of the sinking in 1943, which I have shown below.
The mods for this require some CT modifications to backdate the forward section, exchange the 37mm gun for a Quad 20mm and the 2x twin 20mm for 2 x single 20mm's. I also need to source an early slotted deck from Revell kit 05015 being used for build 7, U-235, as this has the plank deck.
So this one will be my second diorama build for this series, with the scene having the rear section mostly underwater but I will make it be visible through a blue filter overlay. I will also use a spare Pontos wooden deck overlay on top of the plastic deck to give it some 'Zing'. More on that later!
Here are the photos that I have of U664 in combat (after being hit).
It sunk on 9 August 1943 in the North Atlantic, west of the Azores, by depth charges from an Avenger and a Wildcat, from the US escort carrier USS Card. There were 7 dead and 44 survivors.
This first image was taken with the modified tower in place but before it was sunk. This boat went on 5 patrols with various 'Wolfpacks' between December 1942 until its demise on patrol 5 in August 1943 in the mid North Atlantic.

Revell 05015 VIIC and 05163 Platinum Edition 'Cross Kit'
For this build I will be utilising the hull, deck and forward Conning Tower fro the 05015 VIIC 'Wolf Pack' kit with the rear Conning Tower Gun platforms from the 05163 VIIC/41 Platinum Edition.

U-664 was a Mk7C with the following early mid war features
- Early turm 4 Conning Tower (CT) - 2 x single 20mm, 1x quad 20mm but still with the early, mid style forward section of the conning tower. The left(port) side of the Conning Tower has the standard mid-war modification of the rectractable Rod Antenna with the consequent housing buldge. This mod was short lived when the towers changed to the next generation configuration.
- early 'Slotted style deck with the standard early bow.
- removed 88mm deck gun
- The longer version early deck railings extending out to the front of the Tower (clear in photo 2 thumbnail) not removed when the deck gun was. This feature is seen on a number of U-Boats but I am not sure of the reason for leaving them. It could have been on request by the crew.

- The early turm 4 Conning Tower (CT) had 2 x single 20mm and 1x quad 20mm, which is different from the armarment on both of the kits I am utilising. I will be using an Quad flak kit from Orange Hobby with the bass barrel updates and PE.
