They are recognition models. Large printed paper kits were issued to units to assemble and use as training aids for tactics training, range estimation, friend/foe recognition, showing vulnerable aiming points, etc.

Ya'll notice those are the same two guys, it's the same tank in the background.
 
What a trip, who'd a thunk it? I seem to remember working a paper Mk 1 long ago. For the life of me I can't remember how I came across it or where to find that old kit today. I worked great until getting to the wheels, as I didn't have any in the scrap bin.
 
There's one guy that comes to our contest that builds VERY convincing paper models. The tip-off is, the box he carries his model in doesn't seem very heavy.
