MODERN RUSSIAN ARMOUR USED IN COMBAT - T-80U BUILD update 18th April

Brokeneagle

Master at Arms
With Uboats stiill in play, as well as my Brumbars and Panzer3's to finish, i have been bittern by post WW2 Russian armour, mainly due to tracking the progress of the Ukraine War. The images of Russian armour used on both sides, captured, blown up, worn out or waiting for combat, has grabbed me. In the past I have also been captivated by the ubiquitious Russian T-55 and T-72 in the Middle eastern conflicts and how beaten-up they get but still continue to 'roll'.
I have never built one of these kits so it is a nice change from WW2 stuff for me.
So let this be my bookmark for things to come and enjoy the ride.

T-72B3 in the Ukraine
This was the tank that caught my interest initially, super tough looking, heaps of updated details like the standoff grates, box turret armour, charge bag armour plus the ever present 'mag wheel' spoke design which I love.

THE MUSCULAR T-80U

as a final entry for the present as these are the first few I wouldlike to start with.
This first one is the T80U that I will be doing as the weathering, colors and damage are quite interesting. One of the others is a good knockout with multiple angles that may be a second.

Back again with some more..............
Some other vehicles that caught my eye were other versions of the T-72 (AV, B1,M, BV), T-80BVM, T-64BV, AM and the BMP-1, BMP-3 and the 2S19 Msta-S (152mm SP Artillery) built on the chassis of a T-80 but powered by the engine of a T-72.
Another detail that has been introduced is the welded field fitted metal grate screens or “cope cages"on the top of the turrets to protect against drone-dropped bomblets or FPV drones from lobbing small bombs into open hatches.

MODEL STUFF COMING

This is really some interesting stuff especially markings and make-shift items...the things you get when 2 non-professional armies start duking it out.
I have a Tiger Models T-90MS in the stash that i might just have a go at...:hmm:...Just have to figure out how to do that wire armor hang off the turret.

If you know someone who has a 3D printer down there you could get some cope cages printed out Ian.
This has a bit of everything.

Bob, yeah the cope cage is supposed to stop drones dropping grenades onto the turret or suiciding into the turret. They now have ERA blocks on them even to help mitigate drone attacks.

I have that T-90M as well. I am going to 'beat it up' bad man. Like those few final shots of the T-90 section.

Hey James I have a Trumpeter T-72 that comes with a Cope cage , so I will do 1 version like that.

Check out these ERA blocks mounted on the cage of a T-90M in the field in the Ukraine...

I have a 3D printer on the way. Someone else here has one and prints for y'all and I don't remember who it is so I don't intend to step on any toes. It's just "I can do it if need be".

Got a question. How wide do you estimate this cage is? Or where can I find its dimensions? I estimate his shoulders to be 21" wide (because mine are and I am quite average) and the top is 5-1/2 shoulders wide x21"=115". Scale it down to 1/35=3.3"/84mm. Sound right?

I have a Trumpy T-72 with a cage in storage. I can measure it but I need to make a trip to the storage centre to rattle through my stash to get it.

It would be better to ask what size is the turret. That guy could be a little twerp and so you can't go by body sizes in photos.
Googling T72 tank I found some specs, but not turret width. I found the overall width of the tank to be 3.59m. I put the line drawing/draft image in photoshop and extrapolated that the turret is 2.75 meters wide. At 1/35 it would be 78.57. Judging that the cage is inset about 20cm, I subtracted that and came up with 72.8mm. Math is NOT my jam. If anyone else can figure better please do!
