Randy Ditton is also, I love it, had a lay out when I was a kid. Even have some of the old engines around. I've said to Mike and Chris many times that it would be good practice just to paint the buildings with all the techniques out there. Some of the time I don't see a lot of effort put into the static stuff on a layout.

I'd love to see a model railroad section.
Well this didn't generate the traffic we thought it might but who knows, when we revamp this summer we might have a new section for it.

I've always loved trains too, but currently have no room for any kind of layout. Still, I would enjoy seeing a Forum on Trains, especially if it can be a place to show off buildings and such that are built for a layout. I do still build different buildings myself.
What other Forums are not noticed much? Maybe a way can be found to fold them into others when the re-boot comes.

Model trains is my summer time hobby and I'm fully engaged in it now. I model primarily in 1/24 scale and my layout is outside. There are few kits available for the gauge and time period that I model that would be suitable for outdoor use, so most of my equipment and infrastructure is either modified off the shelf items or scratch built. Buildings in particular are a challenge due to finding materials that will survive living outside year round. I considered doing something for the "on Railroad tracks" campaign but most of my scratch built projects tend to run long, locomotives sometimes run to years. I tend to agree with Terry that it would not be a well used forum.
For instance....Sci-fi, ships, figures, automotive, dioramas. I don't think they need to folded into other forums. What needs to happen is the membership needs to appreciate interests other then their own.
See I didn't know that. If we had a railroader forum would you post? If not why?

I have always liked trains, even designed a layout. Train layouts while kewl are for the most part, non-movable. I could never invest the time and energy and then see it dismantled when it was time to move on - of course we have been in our current house 16 years now, before that the longest was 5 years. But now it is too late for me.
If there was a train forum that would be kewl - I would have little to post except some attaboyz.
I wonder how do most of you browse the forum? I just go to latest posts - It is rare for me to navigate to a particular sub forum. So if there were train postings I would see them as I see all the others...

Trains don't have to be big layouts. Could be just railroad dioramas depicting a particular scene. It could be super detailing a locomotive or rolling stock. Railroad modeling isn't any different than any other modeling. It's the subject matter.
Isn't a layout just a big diorama? Most of it is static. Each part is a separate model that should detailed right? It's just trains instead of tanks. Tanks get their own category and trains go to misc. with the dinosaurs. :laugh:

I think a good chunk of a layout is diorama, with a bit of shadow box thrown in for good measure, and similar techniques are used to build and weather tanks, trains, buildings and such. But there is also forced perspective, foreground and background levels of detail moving parts and all, but it is all just window dressing to give the operators the "feel" of operating a real railroad. So not the same thing really.
Les does a great job of that force perspective when he does his finished shots.
To me it's all modeling. Rails, armor, aircraft, cars ships...whatever. I love it all.

I agree Terry. I do try to check out other people's work, but apparently I'm one of the very few. I am also building the occasional automotive, Sci-Fi subject, and ship model and I almost always try to check out the diorama section too. While I can't seem to complete a diorama, I love seeing them come together.
The way I browse the Forums is to go to links from my E-mail when I get a notice of a new post on a Thread I'm following. Every week or two, I'll go to the "Recent Topics" tab and check out all the newest posts that I hadn't seen yet and read all of them on the first three pages. Most I'll subscribe to.
As for railroad subjects; I've been trying to complete as many 1/72 scale railroad subjects from as many kits as are available right now. I hadn't posted in the "On Railroad Tracks" Campaign for a while since it ran out and I'm still only a third of the way through my subject. I would add that to a Railroad Forum.
Anyway, whatever is decided, I'll go along with. Meanwhile, I'll continue to try and finish those two trains so I can move on.

I built a working railroad layout w/ my dad in our basement before I graduated. I always enjoy looking at them. My last railroading thing I did was a small vignette with a UP diesel loco. Sadly it didn't survive the repetitive moves that is the life of a sea-duty aviation sailor. I've still got the train around somewhere...just saw it during the move to my current house 4 years ago. But the base w/ track & scenery are all long gone.
I generally browse the forums via "Recent Topics". I enjoy looking at other peoples builds, hoping to pick up little tidbits and techniques I can work into my own build habits. Hell, watching some of the armor builds from Terry & others actually led me to pick up an armor kit to build at some point...a first time ever!
The only time I navigate through the index is when I'm posting a new thread...or making an update to one of my ongoing threads.
