Mad City Modelers IPMS Model Show 2021

Tomorrow in Madison Wisconsin, the Mad City IPMS guys will put on their first show since the Wuhan Pandemic began.
The hot pink Surgeons will be in attendance. Spectre 712 is on the line, fueled and ready to depart in the wee hours of Saturday morning for the Mad City. At this time it is not known how many other Plastic Surgeons will attend.

In fact 2 other Plastic Surgeons made the voyage to Madison. Joachim (now Jimmy) Lotz and his beloved, Aimee Wright. A HUGE show in a suitably generous room was occupied by lots of vendors, 427 models and 74 Entrants. I took 80-some pictures and I'm working on them now.

One funny anecdote I will share, We left the interstate in Madison for the Alliant Energy Center and cars were backed up on both sides of the street almost to the exit! "Damn! How many modelers are there in Wisconasin!?!" As our line of traffic drew closer to the left-turn lane, I could see there was a farmer's market (How many Farmers are there in Wisconasin?!?!") and the Wuhan virus test/vaccination 8-lane building was running full-blast too.

There WERE lots of modelers, but not all the traffic was for the IPMS Mad City show. Pschwoo! Joe and Aimee got their vaccine shots. Aimee quips that one of the side effects of the Pfizer 2-part shot is that every time she goes in her kitchen the microwave turns on and Bill Gates calls her.

More to come!

All right Men, Here we go!

The afore mentioned Farmer's Market. Lots of folk about. We pulled into the parking lot and tried to find the venue. Teresa points and says "Those look like modelers! Follow those guys!" They were and we DID!

Registration. Lots of Model builders about! Registration was speedy! I did my "Homework" the night before in Marion. "1 Sheet for each model, Please."
20210515_103302.jpg20210515_103359.jpg20210515_103401.jpg20210515_103446.jpg20210515_103504.jpg
On to my usual "4 Corners" pictures of the venue. Big open space with darn good lighting and plenty of room for modeler-sized modelers to navigate! Food and refreshments were available, but at twice the anticipated "State Fair Food" price.

Vendors were plentiful in. Jon Kruger fixed me up with the Model Master Flat Black I had been hunting for! I found 2 model ship treasures I had been wishing for and the old Monogram Jeep & Gun kit at an attractive price.
Good ol' Ralph (Who is that Masked man?) Fredlund, with his massive quality model car selection was also on hand. I managed not to buy any more Funny Car dragsters I'll never build.
Another IPMS vendor stalwart, Pete Gitzel attended as well.

Big Model maker and really cool vendor, Winston Vermillia always has the cutting-edge, new stuff to show off.

These are color printed resin decals for the cockpits of 1/48 and 1/32 Aircraft models from Quinta Studio. Just think of it. Gone are the days of struggling to get your I.p.'s and details just so. Sand flat, dip in water and apply to the smooth parts of your model.
No more bending, painting, or grinding metal parts to fit. No 1/72 sets were on display.

Ready for some model pictures? I thought so!
20210515_131012.jpg
Bob Steinbrunn's Wingnut Pfaltz. Very well constructed, finished and much awarded! I don't remember who built every depicted model, but I will do my best!
20210515_131023.jpg
Winston's 1/32 I-151 Polikarpov.

20210515_131040.jpg
1/48 DE Havilland Fox Moth, with Emperor penguin. I don't think I've seen a model of a Fox Moth before.

I like me a Buccaneer and a Crusader! You don't see the old 1/72 Hawk XF-92A Dart interceptor built and armed to the teeth everyday.
20210515_130446.jpg20210515_130449.jpg
A very interesting presentation of a 1/72 Ford Tri-Motor. I don't get the sinister Pink Penguins significance, but I thought the diorama was neat!

Two guys came all the way from West Virginia to attend the Mad City show. Gary McDonald and Jimmy (who's last name I forgot. (Sorry Jimmy!) Fun Men! good modelers too!

This is Jimmy's amazing Tool box. He builds nothing but car models.

Cool shiny and super weathered (wrecked, rusted, ugly) wheels.

The most important pictures in the armor section is Scotty Hofland's Memoriam. Scott died suddenly last year and left a gaping hole in the Mad City Club. Madison US Navy Aircraft modeler Dave Raatz also took his Trip Up To Heaven in 2020. I didn't know Dave as well as I knew Scott. See you on the other side, Brothers.

Hard working (Overwhelmed by 427 Models) Mad City Judges hard at work!
Ships next!

Bob Steinbrunn's 1/350 USS Kidd. The only thing She is missing is her crew.

Nifty stuff! 1/350 USCGC Point Welcome, 1/700 HMJS submarine Marley SS-420 and the Samurai Bathtub made their final show appearances last weekend. I can't just keep bringing the same old stuff to every contest. Insert Ray Mehlberger anecdote here!!

Time for supper! A few more pictures to come! Thanks for looking in!

Very nice! There are some talented and innovating modelers there; I love the incredible imagination that went into many of these. I also appreciate the attention to detail as well.

I guess 1/72 scale armor was too small to see to shoot! LOL! :tomato::Drinks:

1/72 Armor is in there. I confess that I don't take pictures of EVERY model. Mostly the ones that catch my eye. Like these figures! 20210515_130504.jpg20210515_130528.jpg20210515_130532.jpg20210515_130536.jpg20210515_130539.jpg
During a short ceremony, Markus Orelius Karolus was bestowed honorary membership in IPMS Plastic Surgeons.
20210515_143547.jpg20210515_143614.jpg
Mark's son Adam stood in as Sergeant at Arms and presented his Dad with the ceremonial garment. He did a fine job!
I don't believe Mark truly understands what he is getting in to. I made up a really good bullschtein ceremony and we all had a good laugh! That's Jimmy from WV in the background. He was impressed.

Joe (Jimmy) Lotz and his sweetie Aimee didn't have such a good day at the raffle.
20210516_162328.jpg
He knows when Teresa is around, he should just not buy raffle tickets. My Honey harvested the Mad City raffle in her usual, thorough, joyful fashion.
20210515_173615.jpg20210515_173624.jpg
Two of Joe "Jimmy" Lotz (Not the same as car-model Jimmy from WV. whut.) models did win awards!

In their final show appearances, TLAR Models 1/350 Vietnam USCG Point Welcome and 1/700"Bitchin' Witch" 110' Trawler and the every popular Samurai Bathtub were awarded in Madison as well. I was suitably honored to be appreciated by my peers.

In the fullness of time, the Madison club posts pictures of awarded modeler on their website.

I bought these models. A couple kits were presents. I will tell the cool Tamiya 1/35 Krupp Protze with 37mm gun present story another time. We had a cute impartial ticket chooser for the super raffle.
Thanks for looking in! Time to cook supper again! Watch out for the dogshit!

So, I have one BIG question.

Your Honey is always acquiring soooo many kits, when is she going to build one and post the build on here? All you ever post is your well done micro projects Chris, so I suspect you don't build many kits as you do your own.

Paul, you are quite correct. The closest thing to a model Teresa builds is a 3D Puzzle of the Globe. It was cool. Look at the "Eggknobs and Inksticks" thread to see what she likes to make & sell.

These days, with mowing season underway, model time is at a premium. I rarely build anyone else's kit. Mastering TLAR model ideas and building the castings for instructions and box art take up most of my model time. My Dad's 1/32 P-51B and 1/720 Graf Zeppelin builds await. My 1/48 Hawk RC3-2 needs rigging. :bang head

Way to go Chris! Excellent after-action reports. As for the 1/72 scale armor, I understand; I was only joking. Truth is, almost everytime someone reports on a show like this and posts pics; there is never any pics of the small scale armor so I'm not concerned. No worries my friend. Congrats on that excellent haul; I have one of those Golden Hind kits too. I think I even started it. Maybe someday I'll get back to it.
