Hobby Boss M3A1 Finished

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Here is a picture of the engine.

Everything else would have come from the factory in some shade of OD Green. In the field the "Mickey Mouse" camo pattern would probably have been applied over the OD on the exterior surfaces.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Thanks Terry (y)

I don't want to appear picky or over critical but if you are going to do a build on line like this it always worth pointing out errors or there is little point in logging the build like this. I'm not a rivet counter and do not do deep research but if something is glaringly obvious i do point it out.

This is the instruction sheet, note the inlet manifold is silver and the exhaust is labelled burnt iron.

Well i think they have this round the wrong way. this picture shows the exhaust as the upper of the two manifolds ands as such is "burnt iron" in colour.

Just something to watch out for if you build this. ;)

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Hmmmmmm. Just occurred to me its ok leaving a wheel off but that means you need a wheel brake drum...

I found a picture of the brake hub and.. sods law its slightly conical. enter the spares box and a Wingnut wings prop off something :cheer: probably an Albatross.I cut the blades off, smoothed the outside, sliced the top off and glued on some plastic card. Trimmed that up and drilled a hole through the middle and fitted the kit wheel bearing hub in the middle. The back plate is a kit part and would have been glued to the back of the wheel

I also added a distributor to the engine and some plug leads.

Repainted the manifolds the right colours this time  and now find looking at the pictures its completely missing a carburettor !! So that will need to be fabricated....somehow (y)

Cheers for looking ;)

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

TBH i don't know anything about Hobby Boss other than they are Chinese. In England that would imply either poor quality, fake or cheap and nasty. I have to say i would have no trouble recommending this kit, it goes together very well and i gather its the only serious version of this scout car.

My problem now is the further i get the further i want to take this. I had planned to have the engine half out but to be honest its not practical. As the hood is so comprehensive in its 5 parts i am leaning towards just have the hood open coupled with the wheel removed.

Mean while my little chap continues with some welding to do later now his gas rig has arrived.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Although this is not a review i would have to say this is a excellent kit. The fit and detail is very good. The fit bordering on exceptional !!
Some might find the rivets a bit prominent but i like them. I would give this 9/10 and put in on a par with some of Tamiya's best. :notworthy

I thought i would post a few pictures of it factory fresh for those interested in the kit rather than this build.

The door tops can be posed in the up position and the screen armour down as well as the hood shut obviously

Missing in these shots are the 3 machine guns and a few external details(spade pick axe etc) but you get the idea. Kit comes with decals for the 7th Cavalry 1939 ish.

All i need to do now is make it look lived in  watch this space.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Thanks James Excuse my ignorance but what is the roller on the front ? Is it a winch ?
