Hobby Boss M3A1 Finished

This is my first attempt ever at a hobby Boss model and on first inspection it seems to be a very nicely detailed kit. Nearly 300 parts in a sand coloured plastic with a small PE sheet.

I have found this site which tells me 90% of what i need to know but can anyone tell me if the engine was dropped out or lifted out of this vehicle ? I'm guessing by the width of the chasis rails it cam out of the top. Did they remove the wings ? or just the hood and rad ?
Any help would be great :)

As this is going to be the centre point in my diorama i will be converting this to British 5th Armoured div, 8th army 1943 north Africa.LRDG

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Its OK guys. This thing is permanent 4 wheel drive and the front axle/differential sits right under the engine so the lump must come out the top which is what i hoped for :)All becomes obvious as you read the instructions......not something i often do  (y)

I don't know Paddy, you know how engineers think sometimes...I'd bet it's a top loader. :popcorn

I can tell you based on the Technical Manual 9-705. The following is for the Hercules engine but the Budo was also replaced from above:

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Top man Saul. so it comes out the top and the gearbox comes out with it. Excellent (y) All i need to do now is translate that into my kit......not so easy. ;)
I will read through carefully now and see how much of the front they removed to get the lump out but it looks like just the hood, rad and rad shutter.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Great choice! I will follow it with great interest :popcorn

All the best!
Dusan.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Hiya Paddy , pic's caption said something about an engine change in 1941 , stateside in Indiana or Ohio .
Radiator's gotta come out I'd spect , but the front end louvers could stay , unless you had to take the front cowling and louvers to get
the radiator out .

Course , if you were Philo Beddoe you could just lift the thing in or out by yourself ................

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Thanks for that
Looks like the shutters came off just to make it easier but i dont suppose it was essential.
Also found this which might help others

Not much to report on the build. It seems to fit well. Very heavy mounts to the sprus but easy clean up. some might say its over engineered but i say so what ? it allows for easier detail add if you feel the need. Underneath and chassis is very comprehensive. I have had trouble at first with spraying the plastic, it crazed the paint badly. I washed in mild soap and wiped with alcohol but no better. Seems an under purpose made coat helps. I will see how the other bits go.

Finished Chassis. All OTB. Now it needs weathering and it will be displayed minus one front wheel so i will see if i can add a little detail under the wheel arch. Brake drum etc.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Hi Bob
It will have to be in a standard desert colour scheme as its been commandeered by the LRDG :)
It needs to fit in with the Diorama and i gather they were used in the Desert in 1943.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Ah...so that's why I don't see any green. :popcorn

I was wondering because these vehicles were primed in OD, everything would have been OD, leaf springs, chassis, not sure about the engine. I don't know enough about these scout cars if they were licensed out and built in UK or elsewhere. I ~think~, and I'd be glad to stand corrected on this, that even the LRDG would have been OD with your desert scheme over it. Much like the Stuarts and Grant/Lee tanks.

Re: Hobby Boss M3A1 scout

Yea i know what you mean, All the British stuff would have started out green and after North Africa yellow it was shipped straight across to Sicily/Italy and sprayed green again.
I did do my SAS land rover a while back in basic green with Yellow on the top side and when it was done you couldn't see any green anyway. LOL
I think its too late now , doing this chassis green would be a hell of a job. Once its weathered down and oily underneath i think i will get away with it :) Thanks for the input all the same.
