Giant Arrows

Thanks for sharing that info ..... I've seen those from a aircraft going to LA ..... I always wondered what they were for ..... :eek:ldguy

Yep. I've seen a few of them. Thanks Kenny fer sharing this tidbit of history :good: Seen a few from the air & on the ground.

very interesting Kenny. You knowtheses were not the only clues the airmail had back befor IFR and raidio nav became the standard. Roads themselves were uses. I remember my Dad complining about one of the old pilots he partnered with who always flew the interstates. Also Major buildings in town would have arrows painted on the roof tops pointing the way to the local airport, pointed North (for those truly lost) and even the name of the town or city. Think it would be rare to find those markings anymore.

:hmmm very interesting Bob. I vaguely remember hearing something about the history of the town of "Arrowhead" back when I was like 12 yrs old. That's when I first seen them concrete arrows from my friend's grandfather's plane and he told us about them.

Man I spell atrocious at 3am...

Here's an interesting link along the same lines

Down below Batesburg-Leesville SC there stands a structure that looks very much like a hanger but there was no airport around. Over the years I asked some who should know if they knew about it and they said not, just thought it was a repair shop for heavy equipment. Well I did some searching not long ago on this website and my suspicions were confirmed.

Check it out, y'all might be surprised what you find.
