Ein Stuka mit Spanischen Kreuze

A late entry to this campaign, so it will be a sprint to the finish line. Picked the 1/72 Airfix Ju 87B-1 up in the Big City on Friday. Markings are included for two aircraft, 6G+AT of 9/StG 51, France 1940 and 29-8 of K/88 Legion Condor, Spain 1938-39. The kit decals do not include swastikas for the Luftwaffe aircraft. Both are finished in the then standard RLM 70/71 over 65 scheme.

Work starts with the cockpit. The cockpit floor and wing spars are attached to the lower wing centre section. There are optional pilots seat, with or without rudimentary harnesses, if you wish to use the pilot figure. The gunner's seat has no lap belt so I added some from tape. There is also a gunner figure included.

The raised details on the cockpit sidewalls are molded separately, much like a resin cockpit set. The instrument panel is molded flat with a decal provided for the instruments.

With the details painted up, the fuselage halves could be joined and the lower wing/cockpit floor added from below.

To finish up, the pilot's downward vision tunnel is built up from two clear pieces. The cockpit portion will need to be painted to match the cockpit. Airfix indicates the lower panel is to be painted over with RLM 65. It should only be the frame, so remember to mask this off when getting to painting.

Next up is the addition of the upper wing surfaces. The tabs on the wings and the spars make this a sturdy assembly.

With those in place, the lower surfaces are added. Remember to drill out the holes for the dive brakes and pylons (if you are using them). Also added are the h-stabs, I've left the struts off for painting, and rudder. Here I skipped ahead and built up the main landing gear. Optional upper legs are provided, one set with sirens and one without. The wheels can be positioned in the spats without or without the molded flat spot depending on your preference.

That completes the major assembly, leaving the engine.

The engine compartment is built up from 9 parts. It is well engineered and goes together with a minimum of fuss. With it added, the airframe is nearly ready for priming. The delicate bits have been left off (dive brakes, flaps, pitot probe, etc) until after painting. Some of you will have noticed that the roll bar and radios are missing from the cockpit assembly. As per the instructions, it is not added until just before installation of the centre canopy section.

Fit has been very good. There is some flash and mold lines to deal with but nothing to serious. The soft plastic Airfix uses means taking care when removing parts from the sprues. Sprue cutters used to close to the part can twist the gate and leave a divot in the part.

Rich
