I'd hope the casings were cool by the time they hit the ground. I wonder if folks still find them around their farms. I remember hearing as a child about civil war bullets being found at construction sites down in Charleston but don't hear much about it these days.
 
Hot or cold you wouldn't want to be hit on the head from 20,000ft by one :)

i did look into this before because dont forget the bullets that missed the target also rained down eventually
Fact is it was incredibly rare to find anything in the countryside but very common to find flack casings/ shrapnel and ammo belt links in the towns and cities which is why people, not in a shelter tended to wear tin hats :)
