Airfix Fairey Gannet 1/48th

Nickedw

Beginner
The Gannet was a maritime Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft from the 1950s designed to be operated from aircraft carriers. Very advanced for its day with things like fully automated double wing fold from the cockpit so it could fit on a carrier lift (elevator) it’s also twin engined believe it or not, there are two turboprop engines in there, one driving each of the contra rotating props.
it has great name - Armstrong-Siddley Double Mamba Here’s a link to it
One half of this setup could be shut down and the prop feathered in flight, to give it longer endurance, up to 6 hours which was impressive at the time.
It was designed to find and destroy submarines so could be loaded with a mix of weapons and sensors, including directional sonobuoys, marine markers, and parachute flares.
It had a large internal bomb bay and could carry up to 2000lbs of load out including acoustic torpedoes, bombs and depth charges as well as 16 underwing RP3 rockets.

SO maybe not pretty, but fascinating and very effective! This is one Airfix’s newer kits which are very good indeed believe it or not. They are still churning out stuff from 50 year old moulds as well, so you need to be careful, but their new releases are excellent and worth a look.

Lovely finish Nick. I removed your post from and old campaign completion thread we had from 2018. Feel free to share any of your completed builds. Our Campaigns are what we call Group Builds. Generally they have a theme and a time limit. If you have any questions about where to post something, just post it and we'll sort it out.
Point is, share with us! We love all sorts of models.

Oops sorry! Haven’t quite got the hang of how you do things yet.

I’ve had a further mooch around the site, but remain confused! Where should I have posted this then, I’m probably being stupid here, so apologies in advance.

I moved this post to what we call Wesendorf Field. Named in honor of our lost friend Tom Wesendorf. He loved all things aviation so we wanted to remember him with naming the Aviation forum for him.
Again, Armored Fury we post are armor builds and Civil is a catch all for civilian stuff.

Again, just post away, if it's in the wrong place we're not going to :smack: , we'll just move it around.Just as long as you're sharin. will sort the details.

Nick, that is a butt-ugly plane but you made it look so incredibly fantastic with your mad skills! I want to see more of your work as you are one massively talented modeler!
