Cheers, Christian B)
Christian, the island is called Sable Island and takes its name from the French "
Sable meaning "Sand". it is located about 300 km. (180 miles) SE of Halifax. Until recent times it has always been a treacherous navigation hazard and has claimed more than 350 ships over the years. As such, it is one of the two areas on the east coast that takes the nickname "Graveyard of the Atlantic", the other being the Outer Banks of NC.
Environment Canada has a weather station situated out there and just since 2011 or so Parks Canada now has jurisdiction of the island. We use it to study grey seals as it has become the largest mating and birthing colony for them in the Atlantic, they are there every Dec-Jan to have pups and mate. We estimated that there were probably 80-90,000 pups born last year!
It is also know for its population of wild horses which are descendants of work horses brought out there from settlements back as far as the early 1800's. Another fact similar to the Outer banks of NC.
