I have gone ahead and added the lowest layer of rubble to the rest of the base. This is basically play sand secured with yellow wood glue diluted with water and a few drops denatured alcohol.

Cuts the surface tension so the glue flows. Old model railroad trick.

The rubble added so far is sand, but this is the lowest level, really just color and texture under the good stuff to come.

Closer. Still have to work on the foreground rubble and the rubble in front of the house - so much rubble!

Are you planning to put anything in the rubble pile in the foreground (across the "street" from the house)? I feel like it needs something a little chunkier to balance the scene.

Thanks for the responses. Progress slowed today as I had to mow the lawn and then meet the IT guy at the office to set up some new computers we had ordered in January.
