Hey Mike,I love these Alpine figures,they are always a joy to paint! ! wouldn't worry too much about the "correct base color",these uniforms may look different from piece to piece due to fading by washing,sun light,different manufactors etcetera. If the color looks okay to your eye...go for it...

Luiz (Lupanzer) was using it on his Merkava II B in the IDF Campaign for non slip panels recently. The instructions on how to use it are simply printed on the bottle. If you like to do something alternative check out Luc Klinker's way to do mud in his Master section here...
